Centuries, it had taken. Bloodlines had to be watched, to be molded, shaped, guided. A nudge here, a seeming coincidence there, all added up to the birth of James Logan. Or James Howlett, whichever.

The man himself would go by Logan in later years.

But the pattern wasn't complete, the dies were not all cast. There was the unavoidable handicap that Logan was at heart a good man.

For Romulus' purposes this would never do; Logan would need to be hardened, to be sharpened. He would need to be ruthless, and cunning, and he would need to know how to lead. No, to rule.

So Romulus took all the effort he'd spent in creating Logan, and focused it into honing the man into what he needed him to be. He stole a child, and made sure the human mother was left as the trash she was in his wake, and he raised that child as the final lesson in Logan's education.

So the storm gathered force far out to sea, and the lighting was simply waiting for the right time to strike...
