However, in order to fund the Englishman’s mammoth asking price, many believe cashing in on Salah – who is valued at £135million (Transfermarkt) – will help pay for Sancho to join the club. In his latest feature for The Athletic, Pearce has slammed these comments and thinks that those believing he is dispensable should show him more respect. In response, it seems that many Kopites are all singing from the same hymn sheet, with one fan saying it would be ‘absolutely crazy’ to sell Salah. Another supporter has said others are ‘delusional’ if they want to make profit off him. In 10 years time people will look at his numbers and his highlights and think that it's absolutely crazy that people wanted to cash in. The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent James Pearce has provided a concerning update regarding Naby Keita. The Guinea international wasn’t named in Jurgen Klopp’s squad for Liverpool’s crucial Champions League last 16 tie against Atletico Madrid, in which the European champions trailed after losing the first leg by one goal to nil. Keita was nowhere to be seen as the Reds suffered another defeat – this time by three goals to two – and ended up crashing out of the Champions League in front of their own supporters at Anfield. While much of the focus has naturally been on Adrian after his mistake, the former RB Leipzig man’s absence is yet to be explained by the club, which makes Pearce’s brief update all the more interesting. WHAT DID HE SAY? When asked by a supporter why Keita wasn’t in the squad, Pearce simply said: “Not aware of any injury”. QUITE CONCERNING Liverpool spent a fair amount on the 25-year-old – £52.75m to be exact – so it could even be argued that it’d be concerning if Keita was only on the bench for such a crucial tie. So, when he wasn’t even named in the squad, many may potentially have just presumed that the midfielder was injured – he has suffered his fair share of issues since arriving at Anfield. However, an extremely reliable source of Liverpool information in Pearce has now stated that he hasn’t been informed of any injury for the Guinean, which should really spark concern – if Klopp has simply left the big-money signing out on such a crucial night, he clearly doesn’t trust him or something has happened behind the scenes. The Athletic’s James Pearce joined Steve Hothersall on The Red Agenda podcast and discussed Liverpool’s latest victory against West Ham in the Premier League. While they were given a scare by the Hammers, the Reds rallied to pick up yet another win, coming from behind to snatch all three points in a 3-2 triumph to keep their unbeaten run alive. Indeed, they were 2-1 down at one point in the game and Pearce believes that it was their midfield that suffered because there was no Jordan Henderson to restore order in that area. Here’s what he said about the midfielder on The Red Agenda podcast (26/2/2020): “I thought they missed Jordan Henderson. If anyone was in any doubt about his influence on this team, then I think it was laid bare last night because I don’t think there was as much control in midfield. They just lacked his drive.” The Liverpool skipper missed the clash at Anfield due to a hamstring injury so Jurgen Klopp had to make some tweaks for the game that ended up being closer than expected. Looking at the stats from WhoScored, no Liverpool midfielder other than Fabinho was able to make an interception (while the skipper averages one a game) and Henderson’s range of passing was seemingly missed, as Pearce notices. On average, he makes 62.4 passes per game in the Premier League and, while Fabinho did beat that with 76, no other midfielder got close with Georgino Wijnaldum only making 49, perhaps explaining the lack of control in midfield that Pearce cited. With the England international due to be out for around another two weeks, Klopp must find a way to control the engine room better. James Pearce has revealed that all Premier League clubs were made aware that fourth-round FA Cup replays would lead to a shorter winter break for those involved. WHAT DID HE SAY? Jurgen Klopp said following his side’s 2-2 draw away at Shrewsbury on Sunday that neither he nor his players would be involved in the return match at Anfield, saying that the Premier League had asked clubs last April to not schedule any matches, either friendly or competitive, during the two-week winter break. However, Pearce has revealed that all sides were informed that their involvement in the cup competition could see them have a shorter period of time off. DAMNING INDICTMENT To an extent, you can understand Klopp’s frustration. Just when he thought his side would be getting themselves a well-deserved two weeks off, they will now need to play once again in midweek. Why there are any matches scheduled at all during that period is a mystery. Having said that, this update from Pearce shows that, whilst the 52-year-old can still be unhappy with the amount of matches and the planning, he cannot say he hasn’t been warned. His comments after the match appeared to indicate that the fourth-replay had not even come up in conversation, but The Athletic journalist has disproved that. At the end of the day, he has every right to play a weakened side full of U23s – even though it may not be a popular decision, he can field whoever he wants – but he is wrong to say that he will not be there either. He should show far more respect to a competition that is full of history and tradition, and to use half-truths and misleading proof as an excuse is not really befitting of the manager of the European champions.
