Theodore Major (1908–1999), “Skeleton With Flag”
oil on board, n.d.
While pey wet is as good as gravy, he still put regular gravy on the babby's yed meal. Not so state of the art now is it, the pey.
In Wigan it's often left untranslated due to the complexity of distinguishing the subtleties in the regional dialect between it and gravy
GUYS I did it. I did what I had been dreaming of doing for 5 years. I went to The Trawlerman in Wigan and tried the Wigan kebab, smack barm pey wet, and babby's yed. I felt like such a tourist but the staff were so lovely, and the food was amazing. Smack barm was my favourite; the crunchiness of the smack goes very well with the creaminess of pey wet. Also such good gravy and chips! I know a lot of non-British people who saw that video was mocking the food but I always thought it looked delicious and it's legitimately really good eating. Do try it if you ever find yourself in or near Wigan ☺️
