I totally agree with your last answer. You reminded me of an interview where the writers actually said they didn't want Vane and Eleanor to be like Ross and Rachel from Friends - going back-and-forth because they felt Vane and Eleanor's relationship was more meaningful than that :)
I read that interview and I agree wholeheartedly. Too many times the writers think that adding useless drama equals good writing or who knows whatever deep and tormented, epic storyline. The truth is that half the times it just waters down the whole dynamic and it ends up ruining it.
I get compromise, I get meeting halfway, I get changing one’s mind -- they are all plausible outcomes. But if you do this, then you have to make sure to stay true to the characters and their nature otherwise we’re not even talking about the same relationship and characters anymore.
