So no one was gonna tell me the Fremen in the books speak Romanes? What the hell?
CHANI, PAUL and JAMIS in DUNE: PART ONE (2021)
Just watched Dune 1 again and let me tell you, the second one is so good it makes the first one better. It redeems it.
I enjoyed and understood a whole lot more this second time around.
I only saw it the one time when it came out cause I found it somewhat disappointing and mostly confusing, so there was a lot I didn’t remember. But after having seen the second one and loving it, it was a whole new experience and now things took on whole new meanings and have a lot more impact in both movies.
I didn’t remember “May thy knife chip and shatter” came from the Fremen and Paul hears it for the first time from Jamis. I didn’t remember that hitting your own chest twice to challenge the enemy also came from the Fremen and Paul also sees it for the first time with Jamis. I didn’t remember Jamis challenges Jessica but because he can’t challenge a priestess, he asks a champion to fight in her place and Paul goes. And I didn’t remember Paul’s crysknife is given to him by Chani.
So now, remembering and knowing all this, the final fight between Paul and Feyd takes on an even deeper level and every single one of Paul’s actions during the fight become even more meaningful.
Combining the Fremen’s saying about the knife with the gestures the Caladan warriors make. Telling the Emperor to choose a champion. Hitting his chest twice to challenge Feyd back into the fight when he threatens Chani.
We know killing Jamis had a great impact on Paul, he didn’t want to do it and he never stops respecting him or seeking his council. So the whole thing is a repeat of his fight with Jamis, only now he’s in Jamis’ shoes and he’s using everything he learned from him, from having to kill him and honoring him.
#DunePartTwo - Concept art by Paul Chadeisson and set photos of the Cave Of Birds on Arrakis, including what appears to be a deleted scene with Jamis! Production Design by Patrice Vermette. (from DuneInfo)
Another thing i love about Dune Part 2: how important Jamis still is! Both the care taken to show the impact of his loss on Sietch Tabr, on his water being added to the communal water, and then later when Paul thinks he hallucinates Jamis-his-mentor (surprise, it's Chani) and then does have a vision of another of Jamis' lections at a crucial moment. A big win in regards to internal emotional coherence (and also because Babs Olusanmokun is fire).
The Mystery of Life
"The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience. A process that can not be understood, by stopping it. We must move with the flow of the process. We must join it. We must flow with it." - Jamis
