“Maybe we weren’t meant to be together in this life.”

It’s a simple statement, something that’s supposed to be digestible, expected, even, only it claws its way up Marlene’s throat, burns a hole on her tongue. 

Maybe we weren’t meant to be together in this life. Maybe we weren’t meant to be together. It’s not like we ever were.

Had they ever been? They’d always been like this – crashing into each others’ beds, touching all the time, kisses on the cheeks. They got older and Lily said friends don’t look at each other like that, but they’ve always been like that – always been James and Marlene.

It’s been an unspoken promise of loyalty between them, a possession of each other that made their parents laugh and tell them how they’d end up married. Marlene had scoffed at the idea, she’d only cared that James was playing tag with Peter instead of asking her, she hadn’t wanted to marry him. Did that grow to change? Maybe, for a while. Did she ever, genuinely, think they were going to end up married? No, not really. 

They weren’t like that. They were forever, they were eternal and refreshing and lovely – but not like that. Not domestic, not soft. Never comfortable. 

James’ expression tells her that he hadn’t foreseen that, hadn’t foreseen rejection. James, for how intelligent he is, is stupid as a bag of rocks when it comes to emotions, even to his own. 

“I like Dorcas,” Marlene says, finally, looking away from his face to look at her – at Dorcas. Sweet, sweet Dorcas, reading a book as Mary braids her hair. 

Dorcas won’t destroy me, she thinks, Dorcas won’t make me chase after her for years and then hook up with her best friend.

“Okay,” James said stiffly.

She makes the mistake of looking back at him, and sees him wipe his hazel eyes.

“Good for you” Marlene could nearly feel her heart crumbling at his quiet words, quiet, breaking breath splitting her open. This is your fault, she wants to say, fuck you, James, you don’t get to cry.

sorry i didn't answer this for ages anon, i was not quite sure how...

um. im not really one for fauxcest. but

idk, i was NOT seeing it like that & maybe you don't acc want that but anyway, imma put myself in that mentality for the fauxcest enjoyers out there

childhood friends james & marlene, and marlene is practically always at the potters to the point where mia & monty would refer to them as siblings, marlene got included in family outings & events, they'd tell everyone they were twins when they were kids. and then they get older, they kinda grow apart, but rekindle after university and then they're right back in it, mia & monty our calling them siblings once again, marlene is invited into the family pictures. and then one day they get drunk at a party & end up snogging. long story short, at the next family event, they sneak off to the bathroom to makeout whilst in matching outfits & fleamont having just told james to 'be nice to your sister'.

they're both very into sports & bond over it

keep changing my mind on like how jamie presents but rn i'm thinking like sporty fem vibes

marlene who cares a lot about her education but never gets higher than average grades despite studying loads & jamie who doesn't study or care that much about it and practically always gets top marks

huge music nerd marlene who tries showing jamie new music & teaching her stuff about it because she has terrible taste and knows like 1 artist

most jealous people ever... yknow it's gonna be toxic

marlene is extremely socially awkward whilst jamie is super charming and popular. almost all of jamie's friends do not like marlene

they meet up to go on runs & go to the gym together then snog in the changing room

they're pining over lily together but marlene managed to hook up with her once whilst jamie hasn't and is so bitter that lily seems to like marlene and not her

^ also lily and marlene being close friends and absolutely HATING marmalade's relationship

cause this started from my sorority au, i'm gonna add jamie being a sorority house president & she drags marlene to events despite her having nothing to do with greek life (also in this au i've been thinking about them being childhood friends where jamie suddenly got super popular when they started high school and she joined cheer & lacrosse whilst marlene did track & band so they drifted apart)

005. The Best Friend and Brother

Marlene can't remember a time when James hasn't been a part of her life. He is as much a part of her as her biological brothers are, he is like a third arm to her. She knows him like the back of her hand, probably better and she would literally move heaven and earth for him. Besides Lily he is hands down her best friend in the whole world, the first one she goes to when she needs a shoulder to cry on or simply when she's lonely and needs someone to hug. Whatever she needs she knows she has James and he knows he has her. It is the way it has always been and always will be, no one and nothing will ever or could change that.
