OKAY HEY
Okay so I know I'm supposed to be taking a social media sabbatical, but I'm sitting here watching YouTube footage of a live crowd shouting "The Mysterious Ticking Noise" at Alan Rickman and I'm realizing on a deep spiritual level how absolutely bugfuck BUCKWILD being part of the Potter fandom at its prime was. It was like, this was Jugallo level shit and no one talks about it.
There's this weird quasi-religious thinkcult built around the franchise. Its own web of memes and shorthand. The Scarf of Sexual Preference. Ebony Darkness Dimentia Raven Way. Hogwarts fucking the giant squid. Stuff like that. I think that MAYBE the only other franchises that have EVER come close would be Star Wars, Trek, and MAYBE Lord of the Rings, depending on how much you credit it as part of hippy culture. And even then, despite being super mainstream, it was also somehow so insular and kind of counterculture?
I'm so fascinated by this and I will absolutely be expanding on it in some sort of format. Potentially a video essay, if I can badger @batmanisagatewaydrug and @janatee I collaborating with me.
