Still living my best life aboard the Meryl rewatch train (I’ve watched like 7 or 8 others since The Prom 🤭)
I’ve just finished It’s Complicated for the umpteenth time and this film is wayyyy up there as one of my all time favourites.
First of all, just the fact that it’s a Nancy Meyers masterpiece automatically makes it a hit with me, I’ve LOVED her films since the 90’s that woman can honestly do no wrong.
Secondly, the music? Have I mentioned how happy music makes me? Seriously couldn’t do without it but my god the soundtrack to this film makes me all feel all warm.
Don’t even get me started on the aesthetic, the Nancy Meyers set and costume design is impeccable, always has been, but Jane’s house in particular is the home of dreams! See I’m a cottage in the middle of the woods gal through and through but I would give my left arm for Jane’s house, and veggie garden it’s stunning. Warm, inviting and calm what a sanctuary 😍
Jane is literally living the dream, owning a bakery/coffee shop, healing after a divorce and exploring the excitement/possibilities of a new budding relationship? Come on, I craveee that.
I can totally relate to the whole ‘falling for your ex-husband after years apart when you least expect it’ thing that Jane is going through. The familiarity of it all, seeing how they’ve changed and grown into themselves over time, especially when you were together at such a young age for so long and had children together, it’s hard not to think what if?
Jake didn’t really bother me when I watched it when I was younger, I loved watching how he made Jane feel in the beginning, and how he helped open her up to the possibility of new relationships. Now I can just see he is an absolute pain in the arse 🤣 Jane, darling, take your new found confidence and potential love interest and run!
That being said I did really love the scenes in the hotel though, their chemistry was undeniable it was nice to see her let loose. Poor Jane running off to the bathroom hungover afterwords, I couldn’t help but laugh.
The whole getting stoned with Adam scenes are hilarious, “I’m feeling a little faaaaantastic”, “do you poke smot?” and “oooo somebodies jealousss” had me giggling.
And the scene in the bakery? Having a laugh (and the munchies), making croissants together and having a little kiss? Gorgeous 🥰 Jane is such a fun character! I wanna be her when I grow up ☺️ yet again another example of Meryl’s films making me hungry, the first time I watched this in the cinema I dragged my friend to the nearest bakery afterwords for a chocolate croissant.
We need more films showing older people falling in love and experiencing life, they’re far more interesting in my opinion, how often do we get a love triangle of characters I their fifties? And speaking of love triangles what is it with Meryl’s characters having affairs? Please I can’t keep defending infidelity 🤣
Overall I just love how lighthearted but totally real and relatable this film is showing a woman navigating and exploring during an uncertain time later in her life.
