SHE’S SO UNUSUAL, no. 23. Janet Jackson, Control. Someone’s been listening to their Prince albums before heading into the studio. In the eighties. I know, my tenses are all confused but yeah. If you listen to this whole album with 1999 and Dirty Mind and Purple Rain in your brain you hear a lot of coincidences. Which isn’t fair because all on its own this album’s great. And of course, if you give the same assignment to two students you get two completely different results. This is intended to dominate both radio and clubs of the day, clearly, but those radio hooks remain my favorite—like the tight vocal harmonies on “Con-tro-oh-(l)” and that little dinky synthy (“Delirious”-y) melody on “What Have You Done For Me Lately?”—I’m sure it did conquer the club scene; I was eligible to go at the time, contemporaneously, but never really did. I’m just glad I was on the elliptical the other night when I chose this from my wife’s collection and nobody was around so I could fake-dance. It’s not actual dancing, but it covers a lot of the same ground.
