What is the deal with this weird type of contrarianism where people who think modern US is deeply broken and/or about to fall apart treat Jan 6th as a completely irrelevant event blown up way out of proportion by liberals instead of a clear sign of that?

My best answer is that national Democrats have a tendency to talk about events like the Jan 6th riots as a kind of breach of propriety, like, "How could these ruffians sully the sacred and pure transfer of power that defines the very soul of our great country"

Like, this is a nothing story from years ago but in 2009 Obama gave a speech to Congress and Joe Wilson shouted "You lie!" at him when Obama said that his health care plan wouldn't cover those in the country illegally.

The story immediately became about Joe Wilson's terrible breach of decorum. Like, it took me three seconds to find out Wilson's name but the thing he was angry about was usually a footnote and it took me a few minutes to dig deep enough to find out Wilson's concerns.

So, it's a monstrously ghoulish story, isn't it? The President goes on stage to assure Congress that under his plan destitute people will still die of preventable illnesses (and spread them to others) just like they deserve, a Congressman gets so angry, so convinced that Obama's not doing enough to make immigrants sick that he can't help but to interrupt, and the news immediately focuses on...

Whether Joe Wilson will apologize for his breech of decorum. Is an apology to Obama and Biden enough or should he apologize on the floor of the house?

I mean, interrupting the President while he's promising not to help the sick and destitute, can you imagine?

If you're like me, your immediate response is that Presidents lie constantly and say the most insane and ghoulish shit imaginable and if anything people don't interrupt our Presidents nearly enough. You care more about the content of what Obama and Wilson were saying than whether they had their pinkies extended while they were saying it and the coverage drove you up the wall.

I think there's some of that here; I think a lot of people regard the Capital building as one of the least holy places imaginable and basically couldn't give a shit about whether it was unprecedented or rude for all those people to break in.

Which I pretty much agree with, but at some point, like, we need to ask not just what the tactics were but what the goal was.

It was to overturn a democratic election at the behest of a demagogue who doesn't give a shit about Democracy and just wants to stay in power no matter what, and the Republicans are watching and realizing that he's really fucking popular and they can go far by aping his behavior.

It's fucking bad news.
