TRUMP TO CAPITOL MOB: “So go home. We love you. You’re very special.”

I fear it really is time to invoke the 25th Amendment.

Trump apparently doesn’t know when to stop. If he was capable of putting the nation before his own needs, he would have forcefully condemned what his angry followers did in his name today at the Capitol.

Instead, Trump weakly told the Capitol mob to “go home” while at the same time repeating his continued lie that the election was stolen from him. 

But I think the thing that really got to me was Trump’s saying to these would-be insurgents,

“We love you.”

Yes, Trump “loves” his “very special” insurgents. 

This is particularly galling because the “Law & Order President” had a very different response to the Black Lives Matter protesters:

And how about Trump also telling the mob,

“I know your pain. I know you’re hurt.”

This from a man who has expressed minimal empathy in the past year for the nearly 360,000 Americans who have died of Covid-19.

Here’s the video and transcript of Trump’s appalling speech to the Capitol mob this afternoon:

“I know your pain. I know you’re hurt.

“We had an election that was stolen from us. It was a landslide election, and everyone knows it, especially the other side.

"But you have to go home now. We have to have peace.

“We have to have law and order. We have to respect our great people in law and order. We don’t want anybody hurt.”

“It’s a very tough period of time. There’s never been a time like this where such a thing happened. Where they could take it away from all of us. From me, from you, from our country.

"This was a fraudulent election. But we can’t play into the hands of these people. We have to have peace.

“So go home. We love you. You’re very special. 

“You’ve seen what happens. You see the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil. 

“I know how you feel. But go home and go home in peace."

Don't call them patriots. They replaced American flags with Trump flags. Confederate flags. Nazi flags. And people are defending this? Try thinking again

Schwarzenegger compares Capitol mob violence to Kristallnacht destruction by Nazis in viral video

In a widely praised video, former governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger called Trump a "failed leader" and brandished his "Conan the Barbarian" sword as a metaphor for American democracy.

These recent events are NOT what the United States of America is about.  We can be better than this...we MUST be better than this.

Global News: US Capitol riot: Trudeau says Trump "incited" violent mob that stormed Capitol building

According to Rachel Gilmore, writing for Global News: 

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is highlighting the fragile nature of democracy following violence in D.C. on Wednesday, which he characterized as an “assault on democracy by violent rioters, incited by the current president and other politicians.”

“As shocking, deeply disturbing, and frankly saddening as that event remains, we have also seen this week that democracy is resilient in America, our closest ally and neighbour,” Trudeau said, speaking from the front steps of Rideau Cottage on Friday.

“Violence has no place in our societies, and extremists will not succeed in overruling the will of the people.”

“Democracy is not automatic – it takes work every day. We have this in Canada because Canadians make it possible. Canadians expect their political leaders to protect our precious democracy by how we conduct ourselves,” Trudeau said.

He added that this democracy “didn’t happen by accident” and “won’t continue without effort.”

“We must always work to secure our democracy, and not give comfort to those who promote things that are not true or give space for hate and extremism,” Trudeau said.

When pressed on whether he has concerns about the impact his words could have on Canada’s relations with the outgoing administration, Trudeau held firm in his conviction.

“I think it’s extremely important that we be there to defend democracy and the principles that Canadians, and indeed Americans and people around the world hold dear,” Trudeau said.

“And recognizing that words have consequences, that choices made by people in power can have a direct impact, not just on behaviours, but on our very institutions is an important thing.”

Trudeau also added that there is going to be “much said and written” about the Trump administration “in the history books over the coming years.”

“We will continue to be extremely vigilant to remember that the choices we make as leaders, as politicians, have consequences. What we choose to say, what we choose not to say, how we choose to say it, does have an impact on Canadians, encourages people to do some things, discourages them to do others,” Trudeau said.

“We need to be more responsible, all of us, in how we approach civil society and community engagement, and that’s something that I think we are all re-dedicated to after seeing what can happen in the United States and elsewhere.”
