There were still people in elaborate, heinously expensive clothes, preaching words to the common man that they could never hope to understand. They still claimed to withhold the wrath of some elaborate, almighty, terrible force from the populace should they be touched, people who were not allowed to be questioned.
There were still people born with power and status of that like a god compared to the common man, people born into a higher place into society with nothing to note except their grandfather's or great-grandfather's accomplishments.
There were still exceptionally powerful people, just as there always have been. It's just now you could attach a number to power and influence.
CEOs who cried death throes of the economy if their position was questioned, their authority looked at. Multimillionaire heirs whose assets could barely do anything more than generate more assets, money earned generations ago sustaining a workless life and co-mingling with politicians to enact their will, that it was the will of the market that they were so successful.
"Mmhh? A new client? Total assets 734 million...acceptable."
Why waste time dreaming of dismantling the system, waste energy against the unstoppable tide, when you could climb it? Her magic didn't cost her anything. Just some training...
