Jared’s participation in the deception, by helping craft the fake emails, is a way for him to get closer to Evan, Roland argues, but the character can’t admit, even to himself, that he craves this friendship. “Jared gets his jollies making Evan feel bad,” he says. “Throughout the play, the opportunity presents itself for him to forge a real friendship with Evan, which he embraces as much as he knows how to, still sort of woefully inadequate.”

But as you know, the secrets kept in Dear Evan Hansen are kept by Jared Kleinman throughout most of the play. Perhaps Jared wants to cling onto Evan the way Evan wants to cling onto Zoe. […] What we learn is, if Evan Hansen is the biggest loser in school, Jared Kleinman is the second-biggest loser. But when all of that changes, Jared wants to hold onto whatever it is that he can get from Evan. Even if he doesn’t want to admit it, Jared enjoys having a “friend” in Evan.

With Jared, the challenge is to balance his sarcastic dickishness with his love for Evan. You know, as much as he says they’re just family friends and they’re not real friends, like, they go way back, and he does care for Evan, as much as he doesn’t want to. And I think finding that balance is what’s important.
