Whoops my hand slipped here's some more Jasabby
She’d had the thing for about a month now, and she was perpetually infuriated every time they were apart.
“Pearl!” Jasper would call, and every pearl in the vicinity would turn their heads and look at her. When you were in an area populated by high-ranking gems, especially aristocrats, they seemed to be everywhere. She didn’t have her pearl’s cut and facet memorized, so she couldn’t call for her that way, and it didn’t help that she was right in the middle of a party. They were celebrating the fact that they had managed to push the rebels back and reclaimed the kindergarten, granting them some reprieve.
The problem didn’t leave her that frustrated for long. Within moments, she could hear one distinct voice repeatedly mumbling “please excuse me” and “sorry” until her pearl appeared with a smile and an enthusiastic salute, followed by, “I’m here, my Jasper!”
The pearl appeared without fail every time, which was part of the reason she was never too worried about it wandering off. However, she was still too curious for her own good. Jasper wordlessly turned and began to head for the exit, and the pearl silently followed after her.
They were quiet for most of the walk back to Jasper’s quarters. The pearl let her mind drift back to the party, where a nice Blue Topaz had been stroking her hair and admiring it. Before that, a Sapphire told her to stand still so that she could study her cape. She wondered if Jasper would ever want to gingerly stroke her hair or dote over her clothes, then quickly chastised herself. Pearls shouldn’t have selfish desires, she thought. She was here to serve her Jasper, which was just fine with her.
Her mistress was very strong, and obviously brave. She was humbled to be the gift of someone this great. But then Jasper started speaking and startled her right out of her thoughts.
“What’s your cut and facet?” She asked. Pearl wondered why she was asking her that again, but smiled and shook her head. Her mistress was too busy remembering more important things! Of course she wouldn’t remember her information!
She recited it cheerfully and with a smile to her mistress, who didn’t seem that pleased to hear it. Maybe her smile wasn’t big enough? She grinned wider and Jasper’s frown deepened. Oh no, she’d done something wrong. Again. She hasn’t broken anything in nine days, which was a new record. Maybe she had done wrong elsewhere?
“Pearl.” Jasper said. She flinched.
“Yes, my Jasper?” She replied. They had reached the gem’s quarters at this point, and entered. This was it. She was going to tell her that she wasn’t satisfactory and that she was going to be replaced! She’d probably be crushed and recycled as fuel for a ship or something! Or maybe she’d be sold off for cheap labor somewhere! Or even worse; given a new master! Or -
“I think you need a better identifier.”
“…What?” She blurted. That wasn’t what she expected to hear at all. “Sorry, I’m not sure what you mean, my Jasper…” She apologized.
“I’m not going to remember your make and model.” The warrior clarified, shrugging off her cape. The pearl habitually picked it up off the ground and folded it neatly, then put it away. “I need something to call you by so I don’t confuse the other pearls or their owners.”
Well, how would that work? If she couldn’t call for her via her specific cut and facet, and she couldn’t simply call her by her gem, then what was left? It isn’t like she had a name -
“Pearl-J?” Jasper said. She sat at her desk, one leg over the other, and stared quizzically at the smaller gem. The pearl blinked in surprise. Was her mistress actually going to give her a unique title? Did she deserve something that special?? “No…Orange Pearl? No, that’s pretty stupid..” The gem rested her head on her palm in contemplation.
She couldn’t exactly call her “miniature Jasper”, though they were almost identical. It was also just a tad too narcissistic. No, her pearl needed something different enough that any and all confusion would be erased. It would eliminate the need to memorize her cut (sometimes she was too stressed to remember her own!), and the pearl’s response time would most likely be faster once she realized she was being summoned. “What do you think?”
The other gem tilted her head. Jasper was asking for her opinion, how exciting! But wait, she didn’t know what she wanted to be called, either! Oh, this was so stressful. She panicked and shrugged. “I’m s-sorry, my Jasper, I’m not sure, either.”
Jasper noted how skittish she seemed, as if answering her wrong would mean the end of the world. Well, a month ago, it would’ve, since she’d been practically useless the first week she had her. She was much better, now, though. They adjusted to one another and pearl honed in pretty quickly on what Jasper wanted and needed from her.
She decided she’d have better luck trying to break this down. The gem needed a name that would fit her mannerisms, right? She was very timid, she noted. And trembled when she thought she’d done something wrong.
And she was talkative. Whoo boy, that thing would go out of her way to bring a smile to your face if you weren’t having a good day. Sometimes Jasper hated the chit chat, and some days it was actually welcome.
Everything she thought of began with T, so she worked with that. “Thelula…Tera…Tabby?”
The pearl perked up. “Um, I like those names, my Jasper.” She said hesitantly. Jasper locked eyes with her and she fought the urge to lower her eyes submissively to the floor. Her mistress liked eye contact, she learned early on.
“Tabby…” She tried the name on her tongue as she looked at the little gem. She nodded slowly as it sunk in. “I like it, too. Your new name is Tabby, then. Learn to respond to it.”
“Yes, my Jasper.” The pearl replied with a bow. Her mistress had just given her the gift of personability, originality; it was truly something to take in. A smile painted her lips. “My new name is Tabby…”
So I dunno how Tabby got her name but this is my theory haha.
