capaldiās doctor is so.........arrogant. so...cold. Bill being upset about a person dying, thatās normal. He doesnāt appreciate her for her humanity, her empathy and fresh view on what is normal for him, he tells her to stop it.
and i think itās stupid they had him gain 1100 years in a damn montage
like seriously? he went through the same amount of years in one regeneration that he had in 10 ? come on
and he doesnāt even tell the boyās closest whatās happened. distracts them. shitty
also the girl... who plays Kitty is eXTremely pretty.
How is Bill convinced of the Doctor helping people? why does she KNOW this so intrinsically? she hasnāt actually seen it much
āand you? what do you do? apart from shouting at him?ā
Is the narrative seriously even using Kitty as a mouthpiece to criticise Billās response to the death of a kid? Did she sign up for fixing peopleās troubles? no. she signed up to see the universe.
so Billās learned that she needs to āmove onā from a kid dying. OK????
How th ehell did they get back up in those diving suits and why didnāt they get eaten lol.
anyway that WAS a great speech, about the value of a life, and the value that an age or society or civilisation or species ascribes to every life. great stuff. I just kinda wish that the emotional response to the loss of such a life hadnāt been so disdained. felt empathy - even uncontrolled - remains an important part of humanity.
itās good that he totally lost his cool though. after such a buildup
racism and classism explicitly condemned, whitewashing, pointed out, well done.
hah, the villain knows he hasnāt got an ounce of compassion? weird
so the doctor kills someone, Bill is upset, good continuity.
hm so he brings Bill along so she can decided for all of humanity? āi serve at the pleasure of the human race. give me an orderā WHAT. WHATāS HAPPENED TO THIS ALIEN???
I only now realised that Bill was supposed to be a narrative contrast to Lord Sutcliffe in that she prioritised the life and happiness of a human-eating giant fish over the nebulous āprogressā of crunching people up. But that moment of decision - Billās conflict in this episode wasnāt really set to be about that until that moment.
And the Doctor called Bill āBossā. hmmmm
this is actually an interesting dynamic to set up... AND a good attempt at righting the āformalā power dynamics of teacher-student
This episode actually had lots of good elements but I feel like they didnāt quite come together well entirely. It was messy but it was well done
