In honor of Labor Day and the cultural end of summer, here are all my OC’s at a summer barbecue. 

André is manning the grill and making small talk with Ariel King and her sister-in-law, Maddy. On the back porch, Chris Carnovo talking to his students, Luke King (Maddy and Leo’s cousin) and his best friend, Jason Black, about the intricacies of Italian rapier fencing. Meanwhile, in the foreground, Sammy McLeon (Maddy’s son), decided to be a cheeky little furball and spray his uncle, Leo King (Ariel’s husband and Maddy’s big brother) with the garden hose. 

This picture took a couple months to draw. I remember some years ago I had showed some of my art to a professional artist at Disney’s California Adventure, asking for tips, and he said to slow down and take my time with my drawings to focus on details like grass. I finally decided to follow his advice. I wanted to do justice to my characters—all of them—and that meant taking my time to draw them all individually, and when the time came to color adding in shadows. It was an extremely ambitious project for me—I haven’t drawn this many characters in one picture since I drew Chris at a peasant festival after listening to Beethoven’s 6th Symphony way back in elementary school. But I wanted to do a good job and stretch my boundaries. It was also a bit of personal growth to let this thing sit, partially completed, for months in my iPad, uncolored and missing characters, without giving up on it or throwing it out and moving on, which is what perfectionist!Andrew would do. I worked on other pictures that were easier to keep things enjoyable, but every so often I would fill in a little more of this one. Coloring took two days as well. Usually, a picture will take a couple hours to make, tops. But this one, in my opinion , was worth the wait.
