The New York Review is not a public trust, and if it has a public responsibility, it is only to do whatever it chooses to do as well as it can do it. It is run by people who are, one hopes, friends with each other. Jason Epstein, I have been told, put up some of the original money. He contributes occasionally. His wife is one of the editors. He himself is an editor at Random House. The New York Review prints more reviews of Random House and Knopf books than‐of any other publisher. I would find that surprising only if it were otherwise.
