Jason Chen - Music Never Sleeps
“Cause baby I know that you still love me And baby know that I love you too So tell me why cant we make it better Cause all that I know is found in you I'm missing your love, your face, All of our past, don't let it erase I know that you still feel the way I do Because I'm still in love with you”
This week, I’m hooked on Jason Chen’s music. He’s a 25 years old American born Taiwanese. He currently has over a hundred thousand fans following his youtube channel, where he produces music he’s passionate about, and showcases his amazing voices by doing covers of popular songs.
It has only been last Sunday when a friend recommended me a youtube video, which is Jason Chen and Sharon Kwan doing a duet cover of a popular song in Taiwan: “一眼瞬間”。At first I was surprised by the amazing voice of the girl (I later found out she is the winner of one of Taiwan’s famous singing contest), then I was attracted to melody coming from that handsome guy on the left.
From his accent I can tell he’s from the US, but his pronunciation is very proper and Taiwanese-like. His voice is similar to that of Lee Hom Wang, and has an R&B feel to it. Soon, it was his covers in English that has got me addicted. “Suit & Tie” by Justin Timberlake, “Diamonds” by Rihanna, even English version of Korean pop songs “Only One” by BoA, and “Wedding Dress” by Taeyang.
I’m totally in love with his confidence in front of the camera and his eagerness to dole out all his songs. His originals were even better than the covers. He started putting himself up on youtube when he was only 17. And his persistence with this passion has brought him to this stage in life where he goes on tour, have collaborations with various singers and youtuber, and even have his own albums and sells good-quality merchandise of his brand: Music Never Sleeps.

It is interesting to see how he is actually a normal kid, having a normal degree of Business and Economics, but still was able to cultivate this passion into what he do for a living now. His first video went on youtube in 2006. Today, after 8 years, his voice is now acknowledge by a lot of people. It just goes to show that you really need to put in a lot of work and dedication to what you love in order for it to speak for you. I wish I had known to start as early as him. But it’s never too late.
Jason Chen’s music have led me into this fantastic world of youtubers. From his videos I got to know other talented people such as Tiffany Alvord, Megan Nicole, J Rice and more. This culture of confidence and showcase really isn’t prominent in Taiwan, and I’m impressed again how social media and encourage people to promote and add value to themselves.
Watching his videos and getting to know more about him and his life journey, I can’t help but feel a pang of envy. I wish I have something as good to showcase about myself. Unfortunately, I can’t hold a tune to save my life. I can’t dance well, and I can’t very well act. I’d love to express myself through this media called youtube, but I don’t know what I can show.
These few months have been hectic, going through reflection and self-examination. What have I to offer about myself to this world? How can I make a difference, just as Jason’s music have inspired and motivated me to change?

Just get back up when you fall.
Don’t hold back, free for all.
You’ve come too far to lose it all.
It’s too late to turn back.
