I think the way people in the Yellowjackets fandom talk about Travis is so interesting, especially whenever it comes to talking about his actions compared to the actions of the rest of the cast.
So, spoiler warning, this is in defense of Travis Martinez. Also, TW for SA, suicide, and every other fucked up thing that happened to Travis.
I genuinely find Travis to be one of the most tragic characters in the show and especially in the adult timeline. Key word, one of. Shauna and Van definitely experienced more trauma, but Travis was still very much a victim. The assault on Travis is always so overlooked in the fandom. Travis is the devil for making a sexist comment, but Lottie is still our perfect little Joan of Arc figure, despite the fact that she lead a group assault on someone. I’m not at all saying his misogyny in season one was acceptable, I’m just saying you need to hold others accountable the way you hold Travis accountable. Travis has also clearly moved on from his sexist views, considering he’s watched these women fight tooth and nail to survive, but Lottie is still a mess who constantly harms others.
People also seem to forget that Travis had the first casualty. “Who died and made you kind of snacks?” was such a cruel and insensitive thing to say whenever you know for a fact that his father died and made him King of snacks. While I do think the girls viewed the guys around them differently, such as Coach Scott and Javi, I don’t think that made Travis less of a Yellowjacket. People argue that Travis was misogynistic because he feared that they would hunt him down and kill him just like they had killed the other men on the plane, but I don’t think the other girls see Travis in that way. Travis is/was one of them, but not a core member of the inner circle, which is why nobody really acknowledges what happened to him out there. Jackie is the one haunting the narrative, but I really think Travis has more unsettled beef he could be haunting them with.
The same people who defend Shauna and go on and on about ‘complex characters’ are the same people who dislike Travis for his misogyny, as if Shauna isn’t just becoming a cartoon dictator. They hate Travis for saying problematic things after his father was flung from a fucking plane, but then it’s perfectly fine for Lottie to continue making everything substantially worse all the time.
Travis is by no means the most amazing, perfect, unproblematic, angel, but he’s definitely not as bad as the rest of the adult cast. Look at their fandom wiki and compare the list of crimes, then tell me how you feel about Travis. While he has many flaws, Travis is still a very accurate representation of an SA survivor, especially a male SA survivor. And I’m able to say that with so much confidence as a woman because just like male S.A. in real life, Travis’s assault is never taken seriously.
We also seem to overlook how truly horrific Javi’s death was for Travis. I’ve heard a lot of people talk about how horrible Natalie must’ve felt, or how scared Coach Scott must’ve been when he saw Shauna butchering Javi, but I have seen so few people talk about the fact that Travis watched the other yellow jackets bring him his brother tied on a stick like he was an animal, a piece of meat fit for their consumption. I think his is really shown in Van’s conversation after Javi is eaten, in which she claimed that she’s not ashamed to have eaten a child, because she’s just happy to be alive. Even the van shows growth and remorse for what happened in the line “We ate a fucking kid,” we never see her express any of this remorse to Travis, who is the exact person she was disrespecting in that moment. 
Everyone in the show constantly excuses the other characters’ actions, such as Shauna’s straight-up villain arc being classified as postpartum psychosis, or Lottie’s force-feeding people drugs in the wilderness and starting cults being because of her schizophrenia, or Misty’s drug and coach Scott because she’s just a quirky little Misty, but people refuse to excuse Travis being a little bit mean to the girls whenever he was being sexually assaulted, force-fed drugs, and exposed to the corpses of all of his loved ones? Why is Travis the one character that you refuse to give a little bit of leeway?
I also find the story of Travis’s death extremely unlikely, especially given the information we now have in season three, which shows that Travis wasn’t really a big fan of Lottie. Travis was a recluse, presumably for years other than his contact with Natalie. Why would he contact Lottie in order to find this wilderness within him whenever he didn’t even believe in the wilderness while he was out there? I understand that Natalie had this whole arc where she believed that she caused Travis to relapse back into wilderness mode, but I really just can’t see that happening, considering Travis was under the influence of drugs during the wilderness and he still didn’t fall for it. I think this was a plot point for Natalie and it was actually meant to show her recovering from the wilderness and forgiving herself. Anyways, unless Travis has this big breakthrough in season four, I feel like they’ve really done him dirty as a character. The only person who really took his death seriously is now also dead. He hasn’t really gotten much mention since Natalie died. I don’t like to look at the show as a TV show, as in something that is written by other people. Whenever I talk about the show, I like to view the actions of the characters as if they themselves are doing these things. Whenever I discuss a show, I’m talking about it as if it is reality TV. I really do think that the real reason behind the lack of Travis storyline is simply because there’s just too much going on already, and the writers aren’t able to fit it in, but for the sake of my argument, Travis is missing from the series because nobody really cares about him now that Natalie is dead. We never see Travis’s mother, which is devastating, considering she lost everything to the wilderness. After the death of Natalie, we really don’t see anybody mourn Travis or discuss him in any way like they do Jackie. I also feel like people didn’t take the death of Natalie seriously in the adult timeline, but that’s its own post. 
The entire point of Yellow Jackets is that they are all questionable characters. None of them are supposed to be perfect angels of an individual; they are all flawed, damaged, and traumatized in ways that most people discussing them cannot comprehend. I am not a psychologist, I have never survived a plane crash, and I have never cannibalized another person, so everything I say about the show is purely my opinion. However, I am able to confidently state that the entire point of this show is that none of them are good. This is why it confuses me to see people only dogging on Travis, as if there aren’t people in the cast who continued the worst parts of the wilderness when they were back in civilization. I am in no way condemning people who don’t like Travis as a character, nor am I criticizing people who like the Yellowjackets that have done bad things, I’m simply pointing out the hypocrisy in the way that people in the fandom discuss Travis.
TLDR: Travis is not the only Yellowjacket that’s done anything bad, and you cannot discuss his flaws without also acknowledging the flaws of the other Yellowjackets and how poorly they treated Travis. All of the Yellowjackets, except for Shauna sometimes in season three, are all flawed, complex characters that cannot be labeled as good or bad.
