Jay should’ve seen the signs earlier.
The way you shook, your eyes tired and face gaunt. You insisted you were fine whenever anyone asked or offered food, smiling as you tried convincing yourself that your reasoning was for a good cause. You, much like Silver, often went on strikes of hunger. Your love and dedication towards the planet, for it’s beautiful creatures, it wasn’t something you ever took lightly.
Many times in your activism, Jay would have to be a gentle but firm voice that if you can’t take care of yourself than who will take care of the animals? He was good at reminding you to eat, even if it was a small amount of fruits. Jay carter for you, as he did all living things. But perhaps, he cared for you more…
More than he led on. Anyone could see it, the way he treated you. His nurturing ways went towards every single person he came across, but with you it’s like he tried to outdo himself with acts of kindness.
Just for you.
Seeing you in such a vulnerable place, your body teetering from side to side as you waited for your signal, was like torture to Jay. All he felt was worry.
He knew you were fully capable of taking care of yourself, you were by far one of the strongest people he had ever met. Working with you was an absolute pleasure, your dedication was admirable. However, that didn’t mean it didn’t annoy Jay at certain times.
Like now, as he watched you stumble upon getting your clearing to move towards your task. Seeing the way you wobbled like a toddler just learning to walk, how you clutched your stomach in hunger, all Jay wanted was for this mission to be over.
It was a simple one, thank the high heavens, you and all the others had done what you needed successfully and were on your way out. You walked alongside Jay - well more like stumbled - the tall man congratulating the group on their hard work today.
You smiled gratefully at him, proud of yourself and your team. The truck came into view and you sighed to yourself in relief, feeling exhausted and ready for some much needed rest. You couldn’t help the tired and heavy feeling that filtered throughout your body.
Everyone was talking amongst themselves, but in the haze you felt it all came out… muffled. A hand rested gently on your back, Jays… His face was close very close to yours but blurry. You could see his mouth moving, the worry in his eyes. That’s when it all went dark, the last thing you could register were strong arms wrapping themself around your weak body.
It was a while before you finally came too, the room quiet and empty. So you thought, as your eyes tried to adjust to the light. Your head pounded, much like it had earlier, but a little less. Everything else felt like you were moving in jelly, achy and slow.
You groaned as your tried to sit yourself up, all your bones felt heavy. It wasn’t until warm, gentle hands helped ease you up that you realized you were very much not alone. Without even having to look, you could tell exactly who it was. Jay.
“Easy, there.” Jay spoke softly, as he stepped back once you were in a more comfortable position. You didn’t want to look up at him, worried you’d find him staring down at you in an upset manner. After all, you had passed out whilst narrowly being finished with a mission. If it had been any sooner, you could have risked the whole thing. You could be kicked out…
Jay noticed the way you were avoiding his eyes, he saw the look on your face. You looked guilty, perhaps even ashamed. Gently, he sat next to you on the bed. His right hand was placed on top of yours, his thumb rubbing gently as his left hand met with your chin and lifted it up so you could finally look at him.
He opened his mouth to speak, but you cut him off. “I’m sorry,” you squeaked, cutting to the chase. “I’m sorry I almost screwed up the mission, I should’ve been more careful. I was thoughtless, I could have ruined today and-“ you were cut off by Jay pulling you into a hug and shushing you. “It’s okay,” he spoke, as his hands gently petted your hair.
When he pulled back from the hug, he wore a sweet and genuine smile. “It’s okay, y/n. You didn’t mess up anything, only gave us a scare is all.” He said the last part in a firmer tone than he had started, giving you a cautious look. You bowed your head, “I’m sorry.” You mumbled, “You just have to be careful, y/n.” Jay said, “and take care of yourself.” You tried to feign a look of confusion, but Jay wasn’t gonna take it.
“I know you haven’t been eating enough again, y/n.” “What, no-“ you tried to start but he cut you off. “Don’t say you haven’t been, I know it’s true.” You looked down once more, ashamed and embarrassed. “Y/n, I admire your dedication I truly do. And a part of me understands why you do what you do, but in the end how are you going to make a difference if you’re not able to be a hundred percent in it? You have to take care of yourself, y/n. Otherwise, I won’t have a choice but to put you on the sidelines. Got it?”
He was firm, but gentle. He cared about you and wanted you to put your best self forward. You looked up at him again, nodding. “Okay,” you said. Jay had a small smile on his face, bringing you into another hug. “Where are the others?” you mumbled into his shoulder. “Out getting you food for you,” he replied.
“Somebody had to stay behind and watch over you, I refused to leave your side. I was worried,” Jay admitted the last part a bit bashfully. You leaned away from his embrace, to get a look at his face. It was filled with a mix of emotions, sorry still clearly evident in those eyes. So was a blush on his cheeks.
“You were?” you asked, you knew your boss was a good and caring person but you never imagined he’d be so torn up over you. “Of course I was, y/n. Seeing you like that made my heart stop, I was frozen with fear. The sight of you like that and the thought of never getting you back… it was terrible.” Jay’s voice wavered, and guilt ate away at you.
“I’m sorry,” you apologized once more and leaned into him again. He held you gently against his chest, arms wrapping around you like a shield. “It’s okay,” he hummed. “Just don’t do it anymore, alright? I need you to be safe, on and off the field. I cant afford to lose you…” You nodded against his chest, listening to the sound of his heart. “I promise.”
