I just watched episode 2 of Star Wars visions and I really loved Jay’s story, in particular how moving on means different things for different people.
There are a few Order 66 survivor stories where the character moves past their trauma by once again embracing the jedi lifestyle, which is great and totally makes sense! But I like that this isn’t how Jay’s story played out.
Jay makes the choice to not be a jedi anymore and that is portrayed as an okay decision by the narrative. He realized that he couldn’t/didn’t want to be a jedi anymore, perhaps because he had issues with feelings of anger or betrayal that he thought would make him susceptible to the dark side, maybe he just feared the empire and wanted to avoid them, maybe he just liked his new life and realized he couldn’t commit to both, whatever the reason he realized this wasn’t his vocation, and that is okay! Even his lightsaber short circuits when he tries to use it, essentially his kyber crystal telling him, ‘You are no longer on this path.’
I am sure he missed the jedi, I am sure the genocide of his people had a profound effect on him, I am sure he wished things were different. But he didn’t hold onto his attachment to his past life! He let go, which is exactly what the jedi would have wanted for him! He kept his culture with him by holding onto his lightsaber, but by making it into something new, a microphone, a symbol of his new life.
He lost his first family, then built himself a new one. For Jay, this was moving forward.
