So last night, when I had my rant about food stamps, it was about a Missouri lawmaker’s bill proposal to stop SNAP recipients from being able to buy steak, seafood,  candy, soda, chips, etc. Which, in all honesty, won’t be going anywhere — states can’t make restrictions on this federal program, I believe. But when a relative posted this about this on her Facebook page, I kinda lost my shit. (But only here. On Facebook, I was much more reasonable.)

But basically:

1) According to Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, we spent $76 billion on the SNAP program in 2014, which again, is like friggin’ pocket change for the U.S. government. If you want to know where your money is going, compare that $76 billion to the $718 billion we spent on defense in 2014.

2) Also according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, “Close to 70 percent of SNAP participants are in families with children; more than one-quarter are in households with seniors or people with disabilities.” So yeah, way to fuck over KIDS AND OLD PEOPLE AND DISABLED PEOPLE. CONGRATS. 

EDIT: A little more accurate numbers thanks to SnaptoHealth.org: “Recent studies show that 49% of all SNAP participants are children (age 18 or younger), with almost two-thirds of SNAP children living in single-parent households. In total, 76% of SNAP benefits go towards households with children, 16% go to households with disabled persons, and 9% go to households with senior citizens.”

3) And three, the most obvious part, which I did tell my aunt: You’re basically punishing low-income people for needing assistance to afford to purchase food by saying they can’t enjoy the things the rest of us stuff our faces with AND denying them relatively healthy food (well, the steak and seafood at least) because “omgluxury.” Not to mention, many of the recipients have children, so congratulations on trying to literally take candy away from babies, asshole.

4) Like, as a vegan, I’d like to sit down with these people and discuss not eating meat and dairy, etc, but fucking taking it away from them? FIGHT ME.

But what really upsets me, and probably why I just lost my shit yesterday, was my relative once said, “I try not to judge people because I haven’t been in their shoes.” And what the fuck is this, if not judging poor people. LIVE YOUR OWN MOTTO.
