Ok so I just saw your KPop post and I just recently got into GOT7 thanks to Jinyoung in Devil Judge and don't know a tone of songs yet, but now I'm REALLY curious about JB singing rock, do you have songs to rec??
Gottcha covered.
So Jinyoung has this sweet honey voice, one of the reasons he was handed the falsetto parts all the time (which he used to complain about in interviews) but Jay B is a belter.
Boy has got this crazy good projection and timber to his voice that when he just lets himself go and sings really thrills (like hairs up the back of the neck), but you gotta go off album for it since JYP doesn't allow that shit on record - too wet.
Here he is anchoring a cover of Queen and you can totally tell his voice from the others because of this exact quality (he's the opener and lets it fly at TS 2:00). He wants R&B but the kid was made to be a rocker.
In verse, you can hear the timbre come out when GOT7 did that cover of Mr Chu way back in the day. (Also Jinyoung gets to sing the chorus a little for a change, even though he clearly annoyed as fuck about the whole spectacle.)
In Confession Song's concert recording you can hear their different voices best I think. Jinyoung opens with that honey sweetness. Yugyeom follows, his voice is harder and sharper. But when the chorus hits you can hear Jay B's timbre just dominate. (He's treating it like a 80s rock ballad or something.) It's so cool. Tiny bit brassy. I happen to love old school rock, so his voice is just really fun for me to listen to. (Incidentally Youngjae isn't singing this one which is why Jay B is main. Youngjae's voice is extremely clear and bell-like, very different from the others.)
You can hear Jinyoung's true falsetto really well in Encore because it's a super wet recording (organic, no production tinkering outside the norm, kinda dirty sounding - most K-pop is really clean if not auto-tuned). Jay B kicks in the first chorus and that timber is suddenly back. I think it's just really natural to his voice so it comes out when no one stops him. Youngjae sings the second chorus for comparison, you can hear how very strong and rounded his voice is. Encore was the song they dropped after leaving JYP and it's fantastic.
