48-year-old Seattle man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of a hate crime for threatening to kill U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, according to King County prosecutors.

A judge on Monday ordered the man remain jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail but denied prosecutors’ request for an anti-harassment order protecting Jayapal, said Casey McNerthney, a prosecutors spokesperson.

Jayapal, 56, is a former state senator who became the first Indian American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016. A Democrat, Jayapal represents Washington’s 7th Congressional District, which includes most of Seattle. Jayapal was born in India and came to the U.S. at 16 to begin college at Georgetown University.

“Congresswoman Jayapal confirms that incidents occurred at her Seattle home on Saturday night when she was present. The Congresswoman and her family are safe and appreciate the many calls and good wishes she is receiving from constituents,” spokesperson Siham Zniber wrote in an emailed statement Monday evening. “She is very grateful for the swift and professional response from the Seattle Police Department, the U.S. Capitol Police, and the FBI investigators who are working together diligently on the investigation and ensuring that she and her family stay safe.”

Jayapal declined further comment because a police investigation is ongoing, the statement said.

U.S. Rep Cori Bush tells personal story of rape and abortion in congressional hearing

The first term lawmaker from St. Louis spoke at a Congressional hearing on abortion access.

Three Democratic members of Congress on Thursday offered deeply personal testimony about their own abortions as a congressional committee examined how to respond to conservative states that are passing laws limiting abortion access.

Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri said she was raped on a church youth trip. Rep. Barbara Lee of California said she received a “back-alley” abortion in Mexico after a teenage pregnancy. And Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington said she opted for an abortion after being told her pregnancy would be high risk for her and the baby.

“Choosing to have an abortion was the hardest decision I had ever made, but at 18 years old, I knew it was the right decision for me,” Bush told the House Committee on Oversight Reform

The Democratic congresswoman said she had to make a "heartbreaking decision" in an op-ed for The New York Times.

“I have never spoken publicly about my abortion. In some ways, I have felt I should not have to, because it is an intensely personal decision,” Jayapal wrote. “But I have decided to speak about it now because I am deeply concerned about the intensified efforts to strip choice and constitutional rights away from pregnant people and the simplistic ways of trying to criminalize abortion.”

After doctors laid out the risks she’d face, considering her first high-risk pregnancy and the baby’s extreme preterm birth, Jayapal said she made a difficult decision.

“I decided I could not responsibly have the baby,” she said. “It was a heartbreaking decision, but it was the only one I was capable of making.”

Jayapal also made note of the spectrum of abortion stories that exist, such as the traumatic stories of rape survivors. But other abortions, she added, are “just the free exercise of a protected constitutional right.”

The representative’s essay comes as states including Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana are passing or considering legislation that would essentially ban or drastically restrict abortions for most women.

Jayapal, a mother and stepmother, didn’t mention specific legislation or states in her op-ed, but she did describe what it was like to live in a state that allows people, including those who aren’t wealthy, to make their own decisions when it comes to pregnancy and abortion.

“I am fortunate to live in a state where pregnant people’s right to make choices about their own bodies is protected, where so many less fortunate than me can still afford to have abortions, without encountering barriers like forced counseling and waiting periods,” she said.

On Wednesday, the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice held a hearing on a bill that has raised concern and criticism from pro-choice activists. Lawmakers are debating HR 490, which basically determines when it is valid to get an abortion. And yet, the discussion about women having reproductive freedom was dominated by men, a fact that was made clear by Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal, the only woman invited to speak on the abortion subcommittee.

"As the only woman on the dais, it was incredibly disturbing to see Republican men attempt to strip away my constitutional rights and privacy of women," Jayapal tells Bustle.

Iowa Rep. Steve King introduced the H.R. 490 bill, known as The Heartbeat Protection Act, in January to demand that the United States of America "prohibit abortion in cases where a fetal heartbeat is detectable." The remarkably limited nature of HR 490 has been criticized by observers as a blanket ban on virtually all abortions.

King's proposal, if it becomes law, would ban abortion procedures as soon as a fetal heartbeat is detected and that can happen as early as six weeks. The six-week marker in the bill would hurt women, as many aren't even aware that they are pregnant at such an early point. In fact, there are multiple cases wherein a woman is entirely unaware that she is expecting.

“ The six-week abortion ban bill is simply unconstitutional," Jayapal says. "It restricts the constitutionally protected right for women to make decisions about our own bodies, and similar state bills have already been struck down in the courts."
