Every Record I Own - Day 620: Jaye Jayle House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get Out

I’m a big fan of all things Evan Patterson. 

It started with his spastic hardcore outfit The National Acrobat back in the ‘90s. Then we started touring together when he moved on to the aggressive angularities of Breather Resist and the driving, impassioned hardcore outfit Black Cross in the early ‘00s. But when Evan started moving away from hardcore, things got even more interesting. Young Widows stripped away the metal components of Breather Resist and dove deep into their noise rock affinities and minimalist inclinations. It’s always a little tricky to parse out my feelings on friend’s music. Do I love it because I love the people involved? Or conversely, am I a little too close to the source to appreciate the magic and mystery of their work? With Young Widows, there was no question: they were one of the greatest bands of the ‘00s.

Some bands have a very broad appeal with a very shallow fanbase. Some bands have a narrower appeal with a deeply devoted fanbase. Young Widows were the latter. If you were into them, you were REALLY into them. Which is great for fans, because you get to keep the band all to yourself. You don’t have to fight for tickets to their shows or a good line of sight from the venue floor. But it doesn’t always bode well for an artists’ sustainability. And so the members of Young Widows gradually slowed down and devoted time to other pursuits. For Evan, that meant initiating a solo project under the guise of Jaye Jayle. A play on the name of folk/blues musician J.J. Cale, Patterson used his new project to explore an interpretation of Americana that was so stark and austere that it managed to be hypnotic and hallucinatory. It was a significant departure from his early work, but once you latched onto his tactics, it became completely mesmerizing.

SUMAC toured the east and west coasts with Jaye Jayle back in 2016. We got to witness the songs on House Cricks every night, and they became more transcendental as the tour progressed. In some ways, I find this record a little difficult to listen to now, because I got so spoiled from seeing these songs unfolded in real time. I got to witness how the minimal bass lines felt like the pulse of some lumbering beast, how every drum hit felt like the punctuation at the end of a sentence, how every guitar line felt like a tiny glimpse into a much bigger world.

Evan Patterson is a national treasure. And while Jaye Jayle’s appeal might be narrow, those in the know understand that this some of the deepest music being made today.
