12 Days of the Wanted Christmas - Day 5
Madilyn gratefully accepted the mug of hot chocolate Jay handed to her. It was barely twenty degrees out that night and a thick blanket of snow coated all of London. The pair had spent all day Christmas shopping and were very happy to be back in their warm flat.
Jay grabbed his own mug from the counter and headed over to the window. He looked out at all of the snow, a frown on his face.
She walked over to him and placed a hand on his shoulder.
“What is it, Jay?”
She leaned up to kiss his cheek as he wrapped an arm around her waist.
“I miss summer.”
“Jay, it’s a week before Christmas, your favorite time of year! How can you miss summer?”
He usually didn’t start brooding about winter and snow until at least February. December was one of his favorite months of the year. She’d never seen him like this.
“Okay...maybe I don’t miss summer…”
“Well, what do you miss?”
“S’mores,” he said, looking at her with a serious expression.
“S’mores? Why?”
“Because they’re delicious! I just really want one,” he muttered sheepishly.
“Hmmm…”
Jay watched her walk over to the kitchen cabinets and peer inside. She gave a little noise of approval when she found what she was looking for.
“Yes!” He gave her a big smile when he looked at what she had in her arms: marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers.
“C’mon,” she said, motioning for him to follow her into the living room. He followed behind her, practically giddy with anticipation.
She placed everything in front of the fireplace while Jay ran to get a few extra logs and some matches. He was able to start a fire and soon the house felt warm and comfortable. They sat down and each grabbed a marshmallow, placing them on skewers.
As they sat there, toasting marshmallows, she looked over at him.
“Feeling better now?”
“Definitely,” he replied with a smile.
She leaned her head on his shoulder. “Good, because tomorrow we have to wrap everything we bought. It’s going to be a long day.”
He let out a loud sigh. He wasn’t exactly the best at wrapping presents so he had a deal with her: he was never in charge of high profile gifts. He never had to wrap the nice things for parents or other adults. His only job was to wrap some of the presents for the kids, the presents that didn’t have to look good.
He pulled his marshmallow out of the fire and placed it on top of a graham cracker and a piece of chocolate. One more graham cracker and it was perfect.
He took a big bite and Madilyn laughed at all of the marshmallow all over his face. She leaned over and used her thumb to wipe some off the side of his lip.
“Happy?”
“Happy.”
She kissed him softly and then grabbed her own marshmallow out of the fire. A little bit of summer in the middle of winter was just what they had needed to brighten up their holiday.
