“No, don’t play games with the serial killer--she will win.”
79. Illogical
The three of them shouldn’t work. Jaylon knows this.
He’s gone through so many partners already--having two at the same time should be even more difficult.
It just doesn’t make sense.
Davidson was supposed to be some snotty rich kid, and a desk jockey to boot. Glorified IT, really.
Cross . . . Well, he’s not sure where she’d been meant to go initially, but it sure as hell wasn’t with him.
The Agency rarely puts three agents together. Some branches don’t do it at all. Too many variables--personality clashes, too many people on the field . . .
For all intents and purposes, three-person teams typically don’t work.
But for some reason, this one does.
23. Failure
Operation: Encore
Agents Parsons and Davidson
June 23, 2010
MISSION FAILED
That is all for ‘Operation: Encore’. Try again?
Jaylon leaned back in his seat, staring at the screen. Tried the search again.
Same result.
Weird.
He supposed the question now would be who to go to: Jax, or their boss?
He didn’t like his chances with either one.
5. Unbreakable
He was hanging by his fingertips from the twelfth floor when he felt something crawling over his hand.
Dark eyes went wide and he fought to keep his grip through the startle.
Then there was a--was that a giggle?
“Davidson?”
Something brushed over his hand again and he realized it was the other’s hair.
“Christ. Why would you do that? What if I had let go?”
The younger agent waved his questions away, offering him a hand up. “I wouldn’t have let that happen. Although I could ask why you thought dangling yourself twelve stories above the ground was a good idea. You do realize you’re human, and therefore not unbreakable, right?”
“Yeah, I know.” He took the hand and pulled himself back into the apartment. “I heard the door open, thought it was the target.” A shrug. “Window was the closest escape route.”
He gave the other agent a considering look. “Why aren’t you downstairs like you’re supposed to be?”
“Because I’m a field agent for a reason. If I wanted to stay behind and play with computers I’d be a handler or something.”
Jaylon sighed. “But now, if the target does come home early, it’ll be two of us hanging onto the windowsill.”
“No we won’t.” Lips quirked in a smirk, Davidson held up the thing he’d been sent to retrieve between their index and middle fingers. “While you tried to defy gravity, I grabbed the thing. Now let’s get out of here.”
