Recently translated "The Field" by zillac to Polish if any of my Polish followers are interested :3 It's a short post-canon Jayvik oneshot with some interesting imagery. It's just a little something in the meantime while I work on a much larger fic so stay tuned for that!
After being showered in adoration and romantic gifts by too many people to count, Jayce realizes that not a single person has shown any appreciation for Viktor, despite his countless contributions to the prosperity of Piltover. He endeavors to change that by giving him an Amour Day he will never forget. After all, where would the city be without them both? It's high time that Viktor received some of the praise he deserved!
This Valentine's Day fic is over two weeks late, but I think it works just as well as a general romance piece since it's never called Valentine's Day in the actual story.

One thing’s for certain: it’s cannon divergent! Sorta. Enjoy! And happy VERY LATE Valentine's Day! Smh two damn weeks late…

The day of love acquired and requited was always a spectacle in Piltover.
Dangling papercrafts wafted in the breeze above the city’s cobbled streets as the railings that lined the sidewalks glittered under the light of the sun. They were adorned with bows in an array of vibrant colors. Balloons snaked up every street lamp and the smell of fragrant and exotic flowers had become inescapable. Arrant petals blew freely in the breeze from the many decorative planters that had been commissioned by the city elite, containing more rare and exotic hybrids.
Vendors occupied every available market stall selling all manner of festival treats and trinkets from richly scented flowers and perfumes, to sweet, savory, and salty delicacies and confectionaries. People flowed in and out of the tailor shops, stationery stores, and market-side restaurants in a rhythmic, purposeful flow not dissimilar to the blood coursing through the veins of a human body. Everyone had a reason to be there, be it to procure last-minute gifts for dates, or to acquire suitable finery befitting some of the city’s more upscale establishments. A wistful and joyous cacophony of elegance and whimsy, if not still rigidly formal in that trademark Piltover fashion.
A splendor made possible that year by the birth of the Hexgates. The vast majority of the items on display were not in season, much less from the continent they currently called home. They’d been imported from far and wide, bringing splendor to the streets of Piltover from the reality of their presence alone. It was as much a show of the prosperous city’s newfound wealth as it was a celebration of love. Flamboyant for the sake of it.
It seemed that the city’s holiday planning committee had spared no expense this year. But that ended on the far side of the bridge of progress. Right at the edge of the Undercity.
In Zaun, it was a different story, as always seemed to be the case. There were to be no glamorous parades, masquerade balls, or glorious fireworks brightening the night sky in the name of eternal love. No streets littered with bouquets of fresh-cut blooms or the smells of mouth-watering treats. Call it the torrid love affair of the twin cities, one always resigned to be less ostentatious than the other. Excess wasn’t an option, even for an occasion that made it the temporary subject of good taste.
The contrast in customs there played a large part of the role in shaping that difference, that was to be sure. But that divide had been the direct result of external sources, one of the biggest being the very nature of life in the Undercity. The day of love was far more platonic in nature down in the lanes where brotherhood and nameless, makeshift families comprised primarily of disparate groups of outcasts meant far more to the average individual than it did to the people topside. There were sure to be celebrations. But they would be quiet, timid things, unseen by outside eyes and kept largely sudate and kept behind closed doors in contrast to their counterpart only a few miles across the river.
It was a somber affair to consider as he peered out of the single window that the lab provided. The higher the sun rose over Piltover, the more its shadow seemed to blanket the Undercity, snuffing it out like a dim candle with an ornate glass lid placed over top. Their tallest towers versus the lowest depths of the sump. He could see it from where he stood. The stark line between progress and poverty where color and light faded into the murk gray.
Sitting back down on the backless swiveling stool that he’d adopted instead of a chair, Viktor thumbed through a minuscule stack of blue papers. Blueprints for the central control mechanism he’d been tweaking. The calculations still needed work. One of the angles had turned out to be ever so slightly off during their last test run and the prototype had exploded, showering crystal dust and tiny shards of metal across the entirety of the lab. It wasn’t his preferred prerogative to spend the majority of the day cleaning up the lab, and it certainly wasn’t his partner’s either. Did it say something about his approach to lab safety that Viktor was far less concerned about the danger it exposed him to, and more about how long it would take to clean up the aftermath?
Viktor wasn’t afforded any further time to dwell on such trifles. Behind him, he heard the familiar sound of a set of keys clattering and then the telltale click of a lock as the door was unlocked and pushed open. He didn’t bother to turn to face the door, knowing full well that only one person other than himself would have a reason to enter the lab, especially on a day like today.
“Oh good, you’re here! Perfect.” Jayce said as he closed the door behind himself with a muffled, heavy boom. The sound of shuffling fabric could be heard behind him as his companion presumably shrugged off some article of clothing.
The excitement in his voice betrayed the fact that he’d been looking for him.
“Yes. It is perfect that I am here and not out doing… whatever it is that people in Piltover do to celebrate this holiday.” Viktor said in a playfully dismissive tone, continuing to flip through the blueprints with casual ease. He knew which page the mistake had taken place on. He just needed to find it. “There are too many traditions to keep up with, quite frankly. I’ve grown tired of trying.”
Truthfully, Viktor had no qualms with the holiday itself. It was a bit sentimental for his tastes, but he was neutral towards it all the same. It was the questions he received about why he wasn’t more infatuated with it that bothered him more than anything else.
Jayce scoffed in amusement at the display, shaking his head as he fiddled with something just out of Viktor’s field of view. He knew that Viktor was being dramatic for entertainment's sake. This wasn’t their first Amour Day together. But at least this time they hadn’t arrived at the office to a mountain of secret admirer letters only to sort through them together and discover that not a single solitary gift had arrived for anyone other than the Man of Progress himself. Jayce had sworn he’d seen a tinge of well-concealed disappointment in Viktor’s eyes that day. Or perhaps that was just the romantic in him.
“No one’s asked you on a date?” Jayce’s rebuttal came smoothly as he looked around the lab, noting that nothing had changed since he’d been there yesterday. Good. Nothing else had detonated in spectacular fashion while he was away. Starting the day off right.
It was Viktor’s turn to be incredulous.
“A date? Why would they?” He almost sounded like he wanted to laugh at the notion, an air of amusement to his tone that bordered on mocking but wasn’t directed at the man who’d asked him the question. Still, Jayce couldn’t help but catch the faintest whiff of honesty in it as he paused a few feet behind his friend, stealing a glance at his work.
The room fell silent. There was no bitterness or hurt feelings between them, but there was a certain undeniable discomfort that settled over the small space between them. It seemed to balloon out, spreading to fill even the most minuscule little nooks and crannies that they couldn’t physically occupy.
Deciding that changing the topic would be a better way to clear the air of the awkwardness that had befouled it, Viktor continued. “I could ask you the same question. No doubt you’ve been invited to another fancy gala to mingle with the Piltover elite?”
Viktor seemed wholly uninterested in attending such an event as was his prerogative. Too many easy mouths and idle hands for his liking. The food was always a touch too decadent and the air just that little bit too perfumed. Too many prying eyes and his clothing never failed to become stifling and restrictive at precisely the worst time that it could choose to do so. None of this was news to Jayce. And yet he still wished that Viktor received more invites. More recognition of his contributions to the prosperity of the city, even if he would inevitably turn them down with courtesy regardless.
“Most of them won’t be until tonight.” Jayce took another step, closing the distance between the two of them. Viktor didn’t visibly take note of his closeness, too engrossed in his calculations to pay his presence any mind. A unique privilege of their bond. Jayce was the only person he allowed this close to him without a questioning furrowing of his brow and a guarded stance.
“Ah.” It was a knowing answer. It would be stranger for Jayce to not have evening plans on such a momentous occasion.
The taller of the two waited patiently for Viktor to finish his calculations. The reason for his scant reply. He knew that gleam in his eyes anywhere. Discovery. Viktor was onto something. He would not risk taking that from him by mistake. So he waited silently, still as a shut door and almost as tall in comparison to the lithe man who sat before him, scribbling and scribing to his heart's content. And he hoped that he was content. He spent too much time here not to be.
“All done?” He inquired, his tone carrying something Viktor couldn’t place.
“Eh, for now.” He said with an uncertain quirk of the mouth that displayed the teeth on the right side of his face. A soft shrug accompanied it. “At least until the next prototype is ready for testing.”
“Good.” Unmistakable this time. He was up to something. He was amused.
It was clear to them both that Jayce wanted his undivided attention. But at the slightest indication that he was going to turn and provide it to him, Jayce brought his arms around from behind himself and produced a large round crystal vase adorned with a large golden bow and containing a frankly sarcastic number of pristine golden tulips. Six dozen at least.
He was perhaps the only person that Viktor knew who could conceal such a thing behind their back so effectively.
Viktor’s pupils dilated in undeniable, ill-concealed wonderment at the sight as he leaned back, his eyes fixated on the arrangement that loomed before him like the impossibility of magic itself. If Jayce hadn’t been there for him to lean into the stool would have skidded away from the table in dramatic fashion, taking him with it. He only managed to break eye contact after half a minute or so, his breath halting in his chest as he glanced up over his right shoulder at Jayce, every feature of his face adorned with a mask of confusion. His brow furrowed, eyes wide, teeth clenched into his cheeks, and lips thin as he seemed to struggle with the magnitude of the gesture.
Jayce grinned in nothing short of utter satisfaction as he allowed his hands to fall against his sides before pulling them back behind himself and clasping his hands together. Good. He was speechless. A rarity.
Gleaming amber eyes took in the incomprehensible sight that loomed before him. Surely he hadn’t gone to the trouble of procuring these for him? These were for someone else -perhaps counselor Medarda- and he simply wanted him to assess them before hand delivering them to her and finally asking her on that long-awaited date? And yet, the truth settled over him like ash in the wake of a pyroclastic flow. No, these were for him.
These were his favorites.
Watching him stare at his offering with the quiet wonder of a child who had just received the most exciting toy they’d ever seen, Jayce couldn’t help but let out a soft chuckle at the way the flowers gleamed in the low light. They reminded him of something. The eyes of their beholder. Not quite the same color and nowhere near as beautiful, but still.
“You should have told me! I would have taken the time to get you something…” He mused as Jayce rested his hands gently on the back of his shoulders, leaning over him but not applying any of his actual weight to the action. At best, they would both end up knocking their teeth out against the unforgiving edge of the desk. At worst he would shatter Viktor’s spine. Either way, they wouldn’t be enjoying the flowers. What a waste.
“And that’s why I didn’t. That’s not why I got them for you.” He said gently in an almost hushed tone. He’d expected that response. Prepared himself for it long before the building had even entered his line of sight.
Viktor stood as Jayce moved his hands, leaning in with a quiet eagerness and the clear goal of inhaling them. And he was not disappointed the smell of them was intoxicating. Light in aroma but intense. These had been allowed to fully bloom. There wasn’t a withered or bruised specimen among the whole of the assortment. Lush and fragrant, they were a jaw-dropping centerpiece that stood half as tall as he did and almost twice as wide.
Not that such a thing was difficult to accomplish…
“… They look expensive…” He assessed with a heavy exhale, suddenly feeling a pang of guilt in his chest. How much had he spent on these? How much time had he sacrificed tracking down this specific assortment? Had they been ordered ahead of time? He had so many questions.
Jayce chuckled to himself at the assessment, blinking several times in rapid succession despite not needing to clear anything away that might be irritating his eyes; Unintentionally confirming his companion’s suspicions.
“Don't worry about that.” Viktor didn’t go for grand gestures. Expensive new playthings didn’t excite him unless they furthered his research. Extravagance was too extravagant for him. But this… something told Jayce that this was precisely his brand of indulgence. The sort of simple gesture that truly meant something to him, despite the questionable magnitude currently on display. There were more expensive and exotic varieties, but none of that mattered. He knew what he liked.
“Thank you, Jayce.”
Warmth glowed in his honeyed eyes as they drifted towards the floor, both hands braced against the desk. Taking in the refracting pattern that the crystal vase made on the floor. A soft smile spread across his face that reached his eyes as he glanced over his shoulder at Jayce fondly, the taller of the two resting his left arm across his back as he grasped his left shoulder.
He had him on the hook. Now he just needed to reel him in. Gently.
“But, if you want to make it up to me, I have this party to go to later…” Jayce said in a knowingly pathetic manner, slathering on the sycophantic nature of the request. There was absolutely no way that Viktor wouldn’t indulge him, just this once.
Oh no.
“And I would prefer not to go alone… “
If you are willing. Those unspoken but inferrable words. They hung like an unsteady icicle under an eave, ready to plummet downward. Piercing. Yet there was no chill. Only the warmth of a man who sincerely hoped his genuine gesture wouldn’t be conflated with a bribe. A baseless fear, as far as Viktor was concerned. Bribes were beneath him. Begging though…
He was pleading with him.
Deep down they both knew that this party was going to be a dreadful affair. An unspoken but no less integral truth. Unwelcome reality intruding on their sacrosanct space. This was the party of someone who was funding their research, that much was clear from the fact that Jayce was still humoring them despite the clear insinuation that he’d like to be anywhere else. But he wanted to give Viktor the choice that he knew he didn’t. To spare him the ills of such a responsibility. It would go on for half the night and most of the patrons would be too inebriated to care what lax, base things spewed from their lips as the dusk tipped toward dawn. They would whisper and jeer carelessly, headless of the consequences because there would be none. They were immune to such trifles. Accountability was for the common street rabble of Zaun. Of much lower houses.
Jayce was the better of the two of them at playing nice. But they would both oblige regardless.
With a slow, deliberate nod Viktor reached over to the left side of his desk and grasped his cane.
