Okay, so, maybe the first few counseling days hadn’t gone quite like Devie had expected. And sure, she hadn’t lied in her interview in any way, shape, or form about working with kids - she genuinely had a lot of experience. But, Sunday school and the occasional outing and field trip with kids was turning out to be a whole whack of a lot different than being responsible for them 24/7. Well, not quite 24/7, but even though she was allotted time off, she found herself being dragged off to different activities even when she wasn’t scheduled to work. She’d come to Camp Greco with the intention of giving everyone as much attention as she possibly could but - wow, it was proving to be a lot more difficult than she thought. And she could not, for the life of her, get them to listen to her. Maybe she needed to try being more authoritative, but Devie had never really been good at that. She didn’t really have the best leadership skills, and that was really coming out. But hey, she’d been thrown into the lake - figuratively, of course - and she would either sink or swim. And Devie Anne Amundsen was not a quitter, so she planned on swimming, thank you very much. She was pretty sure Jackson was in one part of the cabin with half the kids, she wasn’t entirely sure where Jazlynn was, and she had about ten nine year olds staring at her, as if she were supposed to entertain them. How they were not tired out from the packed day they had was beyond Devie - but she smiled anyway. “Alright y’all!” She drawled, the slight Southern twang coming out, “How about a bedtime story?”
Tommy started to complain about how he wasn’t tired, and then Jeremy started to complain about how he was hungry, and then Tony started to complain about how he was homesick, and Devie had to really give herself a good pep talk so she didn’t get frustrated. Just a few more hours - a few more hours, and then they all got an hour of freedom, an hour of peace and quiet. And okay, the kids weren’t so bad one on one. In fact, when she was able to sit down with some of them, they were quite lovely. It was just when they got together in a group, and mob mentality took over, that they became a little bit difficult to handle. “Okay, why don’t we play a game instead? We can get some of our jitters out before we have to brush our teeth and get ready for bed, how does that sound guys?” Clearly, asking them instead of telling them wasn’t the way to go, because the next thing she knew, she had nine year olds literally attaching themselves to her arms and legs, and Devie couldn’t help but squeal as she toppled under the weight. “Okay - guys - this isn’t - I’m not - okay we need to -” Clearly they weren’t listening to her, and the group started to get louder and more rowdy, and Devie couldn’t help herself as she called out, “Help! HELP!”
