Jazz 101 with Professor Fro, part 1.

So, for those of you who might RP Steve Rogers (or anyone from WW II), you come up against that musical form known as Jazz.

“I know nothing about it!” you protest. “Can’t I RP without mentioning music?”

You can…but it’s much more fun if you know some basics. Dances were a HUGE part of life back then and it makes you look uber cool if you know more about jazz than Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman (although “In The Mood” and “Swing, Swing, Swing” are good songs).

This is a basic overview of 4 major groupings of jazz. First, I will do “The Big Band Era”. In conjunction with Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, there was a gentleman by the name of Count Basie. One of his most famous songs is “Jumpin’ At The Woodside.”

One can hear, in the piano, something called “stride” which was a major part of ragtime where it goes up and down and up and down.

Jazz 101 Teaches Jazz Piano by DVD

What do Harry Conick, Jr., Herbie Hancock, Ben Tankard, Duke Ellington,  or Thelonious Monk have in common?  All of these gentleman are internationally known for their jazz piano ability.  I don't desire to be any of them, but as a keyboard play in the Gospel genre, I do desire to be more well versed in jazz. Given my schedule and responsibilities I decided not to take lessons, but to purchase a video course.

Jazz 101

has everything I need to learn and increase in playing jazzy! Jazz 101 is a two-disc DVD tutorial course from hearandplay.com!  This course is jammed pack with explicit training, piano/keyboard view, and not names so that no matter your learning style, you won't be left behind. I do not recommend Jazz 101 for a beginner to piano playing.  You must possess an understanding of basic piano playing.  You need to know sharps and flats.  However, James Wrubel is very easy to follow and perhaps a daring newbie might try and test the waters to learn jazz piano! The disc menu for Jazz 101 disc one includes: Blues Form Chord Voicing Add Melody Rhythm Rhythm & Melody Blues Scale Blues Melody The disc menu for Jazz 101 disc two includes: Bass Lines Blues Lick 1 Blues Lick 2 Blues Lick 3 & 4 Blues Lick 5 Blues Lick 6 Improvisation Putting it all together So you see how well put together this training course is!
