Final Reflection
The development of jazz created a new perception of modern jazz to me. Through this blog, I have seen posts that shows how jazz impacts the music today. Things brings to a conclusion that the development of jazz gives more positive impacts rather than negative. We can see that jazz has some sub-genres such as, hip-hop, r&b, soul, funk, etc. which is the most obvious development of jazz. Though some jazz sub-genres may sound very different with jazz, it still has the essence, which we can listen through its chords progression, drumming tempo, etc. Fusion, is a very well developed jazz genre which allows musicians to combine different genres/elements with jazz together. I became more aware that jazz have different impacts today.
Before running this blog, I wasn’t sure whether jazz is still a popular genre today, referring to the pop culture we live in. However, after discovering my way through tumblr, I discovered that jazz highly impacted some of my favorite artists and bands. This shows how some musicians today still relies on jazz as a part of their song-writing. I think that the development of jazz through fusion lacks the tradition of the music style, because when hearing artists today playing/singing jazz influenced music style, it is quite hard to grasp the jazz genre. However, I think it is still easy to catch the essence of jazz if the song/piece is influenced by the genre. I also think that this is what makes jazz very influential to the music world today, because though some genres like hip-hop may sound very different to what traditional jazz sounds like, it still has the very essence of jazz. I wouldn’t say that these changes are bad, because I think it should keep growing since society is growing too. But, we still need to maintain traditional jazz as part of the changes because without it, the essence of jazz in these sub-genres are gone.
From this assignment I have not only learned about how jazz have changed through the years, but I have also discovered jazz itself (what it sounds like, how you play it, bands, etc). It furthers my understanding about traditional jazz while also exploring the changes it is making.
If I Believe You by The 1975.
The 1975 is an indie-rock band that is influenced by the 80′s music. Though their main style of music is alternative-indie/rock, their recent album, i like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it, have some jazz/r&b/funk influenced songs, and one of them is If I Believe You.
More musicians today are making new music with jazz roots, which emphasizes the development of jazz.
Whiplash (2015) is a movie about a young jazz drummer (Miles Teller) in pursuit of rising to the top of his elite music conservatory. His instructor, Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons) has a reputation of cruel teaching methods, however this does not stop the young drummer to be ambitious. He was even inspired by his instructor for having complex jazz skills of his own. The movie taught us to keep pushing ourselves even if we feel like we did great.
This movie shows how jazz ensemble is not an easy style to play, especially the tempo (drums), which is the main focus of the movie.
This is another example of how jazz development still influences the world today.
