The Skatalites - "Latin Goes Ska" (Live @ Ostroda Reggae Festival, Ostroda, Poland) (2014, Ska / Ska-Jazz)

One of the first ever Jamaican ska bands laying down their mid-60s tried and true classic, "Latin Goes Ska," for an appreciative audience at a reggae festival in Poland in 2014. Clearly, The Skatalites had undergone significant turnover since their founding, but this is nonetheless a timeless tune, with this live televised performance that beautifully transports us back to ska's original wave.

And a whole lot of stuff from ska's punk-infused third wave in the 90s and 2000s sure was excruciatingly bad, but don't ever let that dissuade you from diving in to all of the great stuff that came long before it.

Suspect Bill - “Weekend World ‘98″ Smash Your Radio! Jump Up! Ska Sampler 1998 Third Wave Ska / Jazz-Ska

Suspect Bill were the Twin Cities’ premier ska band and probably the best jazz-ska outfit in all of the midwest. They didn’t last very long, but that doesn’t mean their music wasn’t great. As a female-fronted octet, they were able to fuse jazz and ska like no other ska band could at the time. In total, they released two albums, one in 1994 and another in 1996, and then contributed a couple exclusives to some ska comps before parting ways.

Their final album, Bill Me Later, released on the Chicago-based Jump Up! Records, features a song called “Weekend World”. A couple years after, Suspect Bill recorded a new version of “Weekend World” for a Jump Up! comp called Smash Your Radio! It was one of the last (if not the absolute last) songs the band ever released. And it’s really good.

With an unwavering ska base, Suspect Bill find a way to fit in the jazz by alternating sax and trumpet solos between lead singer Heather Leach’s verses and choruses. Leach also likes to switch between singing her lines and more or less just speaking them. A combination of the organ, guitar, bass, and drums all share duties in crafting a the underlying and somewhat intricate off-beat skanking rhythms.

Well-made, lively, late 90s Minneapolis ska. Stay the fuck inside you freaks.

Four on the Floor - “Mach 5″ Everything Off-Beat, Volume 2 1999 Third Wave Ska / Jazz-Ska / Ska Revival

Four on the Floor were a very short-lived ska revival band from Naperville, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago. Not much is known about this band, and it doesn’t look like any of their albums are available to purchase online, but I’ll tell you what I do know, because these guys, from hearing this track alone, seemed to be pretty good. First of all, you might assume a band called Four on the Floor might have four members (even though that would be a little weird for a ska band since you need that horn section), but you’d be wrong. I was able to find one of their live sets on YouTube, played in the dark, dingy corner of a Chicago bowling alley in 1998, and in that set, there’s five members on stage. During the performance, they admit that they’re missing their trombonist, so a band called Four on the Floor had six members. Neat.

I’m not sure when it was recorded, but Four on the Floor’s 3-song demo is available on Bandcamp to listen to. In 1999, a much cleaner version of the demo’s first track, “Mach 5,″ appeared on a Chicagoland / midwestern ska comp released by the great label, Jump Up! Records, called Everything Off-Beat, Volume 2. Compiled by ska radio DJ and Jump Up! owner Chuck Wren, this compilation mixed contemporaneous tracks from some of the midwestern region’s most popular ska bands along with lesser-known ones. And clearly, Four on the Floor was one of the least known groups on the album.

But that doesn’t make them any less good. What’s so cool about this instrumental piece is how it cycles through a whole bunch of fun styles and manages to remain ska the whole time. Through shifting tempos with plunging basslines, Four on the Floor go from smoky jazziness, to upbeat contemporary ska, to downbeat contemporary ska, to noodling virtuosic psychedelic guitar action, to speed metal guitar action, to slow, burlesque jazz, and then back to the upbeat and downbeat contemporary ska. All in less than four minutes. A wild ride for sure.
