Rancid - "Time Bomb" (Live on Rockpalast @ the Rockpalast Open Air Festival, Freilichtbühne Loreley, Sankt Goarshausen, Germany) 1998 Ska Revival / Third Wave Ska / Ska-Punk
Legendary northern Cali punks Rancid performing their biggest hit, "Time Bomb," at a festival in Germany that was aired on TV there in the late 90s. Last night I posted a performance of this song from 2001, but this one has Tim Armstrong's voice sounding a hell of a lot better, and they've got the live organ going for the song's iconic few bars on the bridge that really take it all the way back to ska's original 1960s Jamaican wave too. Prior to the release of this tune in 1995, Rancid had shown no signs of going back to the ska-punk roots of their prior band, Operation Ivy, but this song, which was far more ska than it was punk, ended up making them more of a household name than any other they'd end up releasing. So, funny how that all works, huh?
POTSHOT was a poppy Japanese ska punk band in the 90s and early 2000s. With a very melodic and fast sound, and lots of “woahs”, their music gives a very nostalgic feeling of the late 90s early 2000s pop punk and ska era. They were on Asian Man Records and went on a US tour with MU330. They introduced many American punks to j-ska, and had a different and distinct sound compared to American 3rd wave ska bands. Those who saw Potshot remember the insane energy and fun vibe they had. The band broke up on 2005, but has done many reunion shows in Japan.
This band hold a special place in my heart, I grew up on them. My dad has good taste.
Potshot live in Chicago, 3/31/2000
Craig of the creek single handedly brought back ska and reinforced the young black nerd in me that liking dnd at a young age was cool :)
Why Sonic would love ska-punk/third-wave ska music
It's got that high-energy, clear-sky, summer-just-started vibe that makes you wanna run a marathon
It's also the unofficially-official genre of skateboarding, the California coast, and the late 90's in general
Ska songs can have the saddest lyrics ever written and nobody will notice cus the music's so cheery—perfect for Sonic's repressed ass /hj
There's a handful of ska-ish songs in Adventure 2 and Lost World! And there's hundreds more Sonic songs that easily become ska when someone adds a horn section! Exhibit A
In conclusion:
