Cover to Cover was two less-famous versions of the very famous “My Girl.” My students preferred the Rolling Stones’ straightforward approach over Al Green’s funkier and more tricked-out rendition.

Love Your Collection challenge day 15: secret gem from the dollar bin. The self titled debut album by JD Crowe & the New South (also called Rounder 44 for its catalog number) is a classic of bluegrass. Just progressive enough to possess an interesting edge in the late 70s, but traditional enough to satisfy the usual bluegrass crowd. Virtuosic picking, tight and beautiful vocal harmonies, and song selection second to none. I got it on cd as a young bluegrass initiate and memorized every note. For a time I thought I’d never find it on vinyl unless I decided to seek it out online, because no record stores keep up a robust and well organized bluegrass section… in short, this is hard to find not because it’s rare, but because no one is looking for it 😂 But flipping through the dollar bin at the Sweet Spot one day, I stumbled across it by dumb luck! A wonderful find… by scarcity it sure isn’t worth much more than the $1.29 I paid for it, but musically it’s pure gold, the definition of a dollar bin gem.
