Envy barely even flinches when they find themselves suddenly being jabbed in the chest by their very angry sibling. They immediately swat his finger away with a dramatic roll of their eyes, feigning total indifference. "Well well well... Look who finally showed up. Daddy Greed, knight in shining armor to the rescue. Is that right?" Envy's tone is cold, but their smirk is wide and twisted, giving away exactly how entertained they are. It amuses them to no end how much of a reaction they were getting, when by Envy standards, they barely did anything at all. "Relax. I didn't lay a single finger on your talking pebble. It's absolutely hilarious watching you all squirm at just the idea of it, though. I'm really that terrifying?~" Their smirk remains, almost cartoonishly wide, unnaturally contorting the edges of their face. Greed's threat didn't scare them, it only sounded like a good time to Envy. "As for crushing my stone... Try it. I got nothing to lose. Go ahead and show me just how far Daddy Greed is willing to go for his new family.~"

Greed glared dagger at his sibling, visibly weighing whether to believe them. Lorelei had seemed fine when he'd seen her, but that didn't mean that Envy hadn't threatened her in some way that she didn't tell him about. He'd have to ask her later just to be sure. Then again, if they'd done anything, they probably would have taken the first opportunity to rub it in his face just to see the anger and horror in his eyes.

And though he hated to admit it, the taunt about his new family struck a nerve. Greed was well aware what had happened with Father and his siblings was beyond repair, and he would never apologize for leaving or regret turning his back on them, but there was still that time before everything went to hell that he'd actually wanted to be there, that he'd actually wanted Father's recognition and didn't find his siblings unforgivable and worthless, though he'd long buried those memories as deeply as they would go.

Though his jaw tightened, he forced a sharp grin. "New family? What, you still pissed off I left the old one? That was two hundred years ago. Get over yourself and don't fuck with what I've got. Or are you just mad that you've been replaced?"

Spinel knew nothing about Envy other than the few things Greed had told her. And her biased opinion of them wasn't very positive, and so far, Envy was not doing a great job at making that opinion any more positive.

She scoffed back at the pet remark. "Excuse me?! I'm his girlfriend, not his pet." The question could also be about what she was in general. That wasn't something she could blame Envy for asking about. There wasn't any other Gem in this place. "I'm a Gem." Already expecting the questions, she elaborated with a sigh, "We're a species of sapient gemstones. Our gems are the core of our beings, and everything else is a projection. We're made of light." She chose to ignore the comment about her looking weird

Oh shoot, maybe she shouldn't have worded herself that way. Did they think she was a homunculus too? After clearing her throat, Black Star would nervously laugh and clarify the misunderstanding. "Sorry, I'm not trying to compare you to me! I-I just meant, you see.." she twiddles her fingers, another nervous laugh escaping the small grey person's throat. "I met another homunculus named Greed, so ah.. m-meeting you too is ah, well.. kinda cool?" Poor Black Star, just trying to keep the peace.

Greed wasn't sure why he'd brought it up. There was nothing good that ran in their family, and as far as he was concerned all of them were just as guilty of the same things in one way or another. They just reacted. It wasn't so much a conscious thought as a second nature, likely something Father had instilled in all seven of them while claiming to have shed from himself. Though Greed would argue that it was still there. Father was just as hateful as the rest of them, but to hear Envy say it was like thorns in his skin.

As much as he wanted to deny it, Greed was just as much a part of his as the rest of them. Leaving hadn't separated him from that particular family trait. Instead he'd used it to justify himself, never looking deeper than that he'd reacted and hadn't moved on from it. Any deeper thought or regret had long been buried. He couldn't afford to look back on the way things had been before everything went to hell, back when they all still talked like normal siblings would. That would mean regretting what he'd lost, what he'd thrown away without looking any more deeply into it than surface level.

But that last conversation with Envy still lingered, and that final scream before they'd parted ways still rang in his ears. The truth still hadn't fully settled, instead a roiling chaos behind his eyes that wouldn't quiet until the deafening roar was all he heard. Envy hadn't done it. He'd unapologetically despised their very being for over a century over something they'd had no part in. And he'd been staring that cold, hard fact in its accusatory face ever since the revelation and fighting a losing battle over deciding whether to accept it.

For the first time in two hundred years, Greed didn't know what he wanted. There was no pretending a century of hatred and blame could just be wiped clean; its ugly repercussions would always linger. Were they just supposed to make up and forge a familial bond like some fairy tale? Just pretend that things could go back to the way they were? The truth was, neither of them were completely innocent, but tearing each other apart with accusations and insinuations left him more empty than satisfied. There it was again. Their family trait of just reacting.

But Envy seemed to be suggesting something different, something Greed had made no move to accept before this point and wouldn't have given a second thought to if not for the inexplicable wrongness that hadn't stopped its clamor ever since those damning words broke over a hundred years of accepted reality. It was Wrath.

Greed crossed his arms tightly across his chest, violet eyes narrowed and boring into this sibling's face as if evaluating whether that was a truthful consideration or just a way to get under his skin. Just get a rise out of him by saying his unfounded hatred just made him one of the family.

Finally, he took a deep breath through his nose and leaned back against the wall, not quite open but tentatively less defensive. "So you wanna talk? Is that it?" His tone was laced with skepticism, but he wasn't shutting it out. Not this time.

A brief pause while he calculated what the intention behind it was, but while it could very well just be another sarcastic jab on both of their parts, in the end, Greed concluded with a curt nod. "Fine." It wasn't much of an invitation, just a thin crack in the door he'd slammed shut, but with that single word, he'd left a tentative opening that would have been unthinkable for longer than either of them likely cared to think about.

He has half a mind to say, 'for someone who hates being pitied, you sure make it easy to do', a sardonic and cruel jab as recompense not only for the pipsqueak comment, but really, for… everything they just said. 

But it doesn’t sit right in his stomach and chest to rub salt in that particular wound, especially since it’s not as if Envy’s outright trying to attack him at the moment. 

He bites the comment back, but only just. 

“Pride said something about this once. That it’s only natural for children to want their father’s approval. I dunno if I agree with that; my old man abandoned us– looked us dead in the eyes when he did it, too. I get why he did it, but it’s hard to forget that detached look on his face, how he stared at us right down the bridge of his nose like he was already trying to erase us from his memory.” Ed’s mouth twisted bitterly. 

“I’ve never wanted his approval, and I would sooner gag than let him be proud of me. I didn’t do jack for him; I did the right thing because it’s right. …And because I had a selfish mission.” 

The blonde sighs, shaking his head ruefully. “I wanted to fix my own mistakes. And I did! I just regret how many people got caught in the crossfires of it. You would know one of them.” The withering glare he gave them from the corners of his eyes could have wilted flowers. 

“Can your father say the same? That if he were here, he’d feel bad about what happened to you? How can you call anything he did brilliant, if you were the exact same to him that humans were? He once told me he wouldn’t apologize to an ant if he stepped on it, and that’s how he saw us. But Envy– you and I are made of the same stuff. He used you. He used me. What’s actually so different about us, huh? You think he wouldn’t have trampled you if that meant getting what he wanted?”

“Don’t you ever praise someone who would sooner devour you whole than feel bad that he didn’t tuck you into bed at night, or kiss your boo boos better. Even you’re better than that.”
