A Thing I need (modern obviously, but): Jean butting up against the gender binary. He doesn’t like the spotlight so he probably wouldn’t do it out in public except like for Pride or something but?? Cosette gets made fun of for wearing a dress, so he makes himself one to match. She learns how to use makeup practicing on him. And although painted fingernails are for private audiences only, he has no qualms about going around in flip-flops with brightly colored toes.
