You promised. You had to keep that promise, no matter what. You had to. For her.

That morning you felt broken. More than usual. Something was wrong, very wrong with that day.

That first day of school would change your life. She caught your eye the moment you walked into the room. Was it the distant look she had about her, the little glance she gave you in acknowledgement, or the stories you read in her eyes? You couldn't know. All you knew was that you needed her.

It went well for a good while. You got close to her, but never really recognized her faults. You thought she was yours just as you were hers. You could have never thought you'd hear of her cheating on you. They were just rumors, of course, but doubt seeped deep into your mind to the point you couldn't look her in the eyes anymore and tell her that you still love her.

You had to let go of all you had with her. It broke both of you, but eventually you were merely thinking of her as a ghost of the past, a mistake you'd make a second time in a heartbeat.

She should have got over you quickly, but she didn't. Never would you have expected to hear her say that she can't go on without you, to hear her ask for forgiveness, to hear her beg you to stay with her. She loved you. She needed you. So you promised that you'd stay with her forever, no matter how much it would hurt. You'd be by her side until the very last moment, no matter what.

Years passed, and your life with her was perfect for you. What you never knew was that she never got a reason to stay. She never promised to stay with you. Little by little, her past was engulfing her soul in a dark veil of desperation and she was falling apart right in front of your eyes, but you never knew.

That night was wrong. Very wrong. You asked her if she was alright, much like you always did, and she brushed it aside once again with a smile and a funny answer. She managed to make you go to bed, saying she would stay up late to work on her masterpiece that she'd show you later.

You woke up in the middle of the night to find she wasn't beside you. Instead, she was lying on the floor of her little workshop. Red stained the floor as her eyes were staring lifeless into the void. Her body, once so warm and loving, was now laying cold as ice in your arms.

She was already too far to hear your sweet love whispers, too far to wipe away the tears from your eyes, too far to be by your side.

You stayed with her until the end, no matter how much it hurt. You promised her. And you couldn't break that promise.
