I have a lot of love for Cathy because I don’t think she’s fairly portrayed in the musical. JRB wrote this based on his own life, so we’re biased to find Jamie a more sympathetic character. Add the fact that Jamie’s story is forwards and Cathy’s is the one that’s backwards... we fall in love with Jamie because he’s happy and funny, whereas Cathy is sad and not an audience grabber. Cathy deserves better!!! I’d like to see the show redone where Jamie is backwards and Cathy is forwards.
Oh, also!! Jamie is scary manipulative and we see that especially with Jeremy Jordan’s performance. “Perfectly balanced and then I start making cautious, deliberate mistakes.” He’s aware of every move he makes when he’s ruining the relationship. Also the line “I didn’t see a way we both could win”!!!! Jamie can’t find a way for them to compromise so he decides to be the one to come out on top.
Yeah, Jamie is definitely The Worst. Though, I actually felt the movie was far more sympathetic to Cathy (partially because of the inclusion of Jamie calling her cra*y, having multiple partners, and some of the vocal inflection Jeremy Jordan used). We’re introduced to the story by way of her pain, from the get go with “Still Hurting” we’re compelled to sympathize with Cathy.
I find Jamie gross from the start with Shiksa Goddess. It’s all about how much he loves that Cathy isn’t Jewish, compared to I Can Do Better Than That which, while judgmental, is about how much she loves him. Then there’s Moving Too Fast which is all about his success and how he wants to just plow through everything, including his relationship. It’s still not really about her. in fact, we don’t get a song actually about Cathy from Jamie until The Schmuel Song. Where Cathy was too into Jamie and saw him as the person who was gonna fix all her problems, Jamie never really saw Cathy as a person. She was his muse, then his fangirl, the reason he couldn’t sleep with those hot girls, and lastly the thing keeping him from his New Muse. Part of why he ran is he didn’t want to deal with the reality of Cathy at all.
That “Perfectly balanced and then I start making cautious, deliberate mistakes” line is definitely manipulative. He’s tired of being with her and instead of communicating, he starts to intentionally cause issues in his marriage so she’ll pull farther away. This goes back to him still, after five years together, not seeing Cathy as an actual person. Now she’s just this shadow looming over him, holding him back from happiness (“Put on my armor – / I'm off to Ohio / Back into battle till I don't know when”). Jamie doesn’t know Cathy, even now. He still doesn’t understand her, and he doesn’t want to. He just wants to be “in love,” regardless of who it’s with ( “Since I need to be in love with someone / Maybe I could be in love with someone / Like you…”).
Also A Miracle Would Happen is literally so gross, they just got married and he’s already waning to cheat.
