How fare the painter and the man without a dog on this chilly night?

Night is a fine, cold blanket. The sun slips from the horizon, as a guest leaving a party in secret. Lights wink on, and the street becomes a dark mirror. The painter is wearing a long wool coat, a hat, and gloves, and he looks clean and sober and cold and a little bit anonymous. Standing outside a relative stranger’s door, and leaning against the wall, he looks down at his shoes, and sees how bright they look. Two shiny black beetles, they seem ready to hop away at a moment’s notice, leaving him all alone. What lousy luck, he thinks. How unlucky in love is he! Surely no one has ever been unluckier in love than he! And he laughs, and he says to himself, to himself, to himself, it's true, no one has ever been unluckier in love than me, and he walks a little, feeling more and more sorry for himself. What a runt he is. Of what use to anybody is a man like me? And he watches the street reflect the street, and he wonders what the people inside the houses are thinking as they watch him and the street. They must be be glad that they’re warm at home and not cold outside on a night like this. Probably.

“I love you,” the man without a dog tells him often. He says it like this, “It’s cold outside.” Or “Do you want some more coffee?” Or “I thought of you this morning.” The painter is not used to the idea that someone besides him could like him so much, all of him, and doesn’t always understand what it means.
