#KingOfTheRoad 👑🛣🇵🇭 || The Jeepney - the original Pinoy streetart. This mode of public transport dominate the roads all over the Philippines. Originally made from US military jeeps left over from World War II, these flamboyantly-adorned vehicles symbolize the ingenuity and industry of the Filipino, as well as the lingering effects of imperialism. Jeepney drivers continue to be underpaid and overworked, with most of them working 10-12 hours a day, barely making enough to pay the "boundary," the rent they have to pay the owners for the operation of the jeepney. After paying the boundary, drivers are typically left with a measly 300 to 400 pesos (around $8.00) after a 10-hour day. There have been calls to end the boundary system. In addition to promoting labor exploitation, it has also been cited as one of the reasons for the city girdlock - it forces stiff competition among bus and Jeepney drivers, forcing them to race in the busy and crowded streets to get ahead, at the expense of safety and traffic rules. Hopefully President Duterte will make the necessary steps to truly serve the needs of the transport workers as he moves towards the achievement of his campaign promise to fix income inequality and ensure that economic growth flows down to the poor. || Thanks to all my family and friends in the Philippines! You've made this trip such a memorable one.
