Summary:
What REALLY motivates you?
I don’t want to sound cliché here, but hear me out. We’ve all heard people ask “what’s your why?”
The thing is, when you really break it down, there’s some of us that it’s money at first, because we didn’t have any money.
Let me share with you a story. This was probably back when I was eight or nine years old. We’d go to the store with my mom, and she would always have to say, “We can’t afford that. We don’t have the money.” In my head, I always thought we didn’t have any money. She’d always verbally say money’s hard to make. In my head, I’m thinking money’s hard to make, and so, I think, one of my reasons that motivated me to become an entrepreneur is I didn’t have any money. I wanted to have money. I wanted to have the lifestyle and things that we didn’t have as I was growing up.
Let’s expand on that. Let’s go a little deeper, though. There are some of us, and there are some of all of us, that we have these things that we want to achieve. We have these reasons why, right?
Here’s what I want you to do. When the video’s over, at night before you go to bed, or this morning, whenever, and you’re watching this, I really want you to write down what are some things you want, and then why you want them, but then I want you to dig deeper, and then ask yourself why do you want THAT?
For example, let’s say you want to become a millionaire. Cool. That’s a motivation, right? Why do you want to become a millionaire? What’s the reason there? Is it because you don’t have to worry about money, because I’ll tell you what. If you make a million, you’ll find a reason to spend a million. After that, you want to not worry about money. Why do you not want to worry about money? Is it because you want to stay away from – when you were growing up, you didn’t have any money?
You want to dig three to four levels deep. I’ve done this before with several different things, and one of the things that I got down to, for me, and it might be different for you –we’re all going to have our different answers – but I felt that the reason why I wanted to do a lot of things is because it made me feel like I’m worth something. It made me feel like I mattered. It made me feel like I can contribute something to the world. That was way under the money part. Yes, I wanted money. Why do I want the money? Well, because I want this. I dig, and I dig, and I dig, and then all of a sudden it was like, because I want to matter. I do want to be good enough. I feel like I am good enough. That’s what it got down to.
You’ll be surprised, when you look at the surface, the first surface, and then you dig and ask the why of that, and the second level, you go down to the third, fourth, you might even make it to the fifth level deep. You’re really going to get to the root of why you want what you want. I think that’s key, because I think when nobody’s around, when you’re by yourself, you sit there with a journal and a pen and piece of paper, and you start to write, I think something really happens when you take time, and you block time to actually think about what you’re thinking about, and gaffe it out with your pen or your pencil. I think something’s going to happen to you.
I think what’s happening is we’re so distracted today by social media, by everything that’s happening in our lives and our careers and families, and all these different things. We don’t even have time to sit down and sharpen the saw and sit down and think about what we really want. We think we know what we want because that’s what the TV is saying, and that’s what people in social media are saying, and the Cosmo checklist, and things like that. What do you want? It’s going to take a little while to work at that. It’s not going to happen automatically. It’s not going to be just a surface answer. It’s something that you really have to work on. Don’t guess anymore. Let’s get to the answer. With that said, hopefully, and I know this, digging deep to find your reasons why, the reasons why you’re motivated are going to help you arrive at your next intended destination healthy, wealthy, and happy. I’ll see you in the comments below.
