👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼 @jeffhahnstudio (cont) in fashion, the asian male is practically invisible. of the 559 covers since 1980, i-D magazine, self-described as having broken ground defining fashion & contemporary culture, has only featured 1.5 asian male faces on their covers. one and a half. that’s 0.27%. what’s up with that, @i_d? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @okcupid famously published a study on over 25 million peoples dating preferences, concluding that asian men (& black women) are the least liked. @tiffwang_ vents her fustration: “nothing pisses me off more than when someone says “i’m just not attracted to asian men”…they just shrug as if it’s something that just can’t be helped”. the gay community is even more unashamedly explicit, with many profiles flaunting a “no rice, no spice” messaging policy/ preference is one thing, but discriminating against a group of people entirely because of race is the definition of racism. tiffany hits the nail on the head - “does it occur to people that our racial dating preferences have been socially conditioned? that it’s no coincidence we don’t associate asian men with masculinity and sexual prowess, since they are almost exclusively cast in roles that are limiting and decidedly unsexy?” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ my new story for @_manabouttownuk features an all (east) asian male cast, aimed at celebrating the beauty/diversity and giving visibility to asian men.
