All we know is during this year something/Someone Happened to James that changed him
James went from immature Marauder to Head Boy Material that year
That's a big change.
You know who also went through a BIG change?
Regulus Black. Went from pure blood supremacist to sacrificing himself to help take down Voldemort.

June/July 1977: Sirius gets kicked out of the house. James obviously takes Sirius's side. Bros before hoes. Ends things with Reggie.
Regulus is driven to the Death Eaters. But then realizes-
James was right. These people are crazy. Dark. Evil.
But it's too late. It's Summer of 1979. James is a changed man. He is married to Lily Evans. Still best friends with Regulus's estranged brother.
What does Reggie do?
Sacrifice himself in hope that his lover can one day live happy with his family.
