It was odd, waking up in an unfamiliar environment, the lights far too bright and the sounds not at all what he was used to hearing in his bedroom. He could hear muttering somewhere nearby and a soft beeping sound of a heart monitor, and despite not having opened his eyes yet he could tell the room was lit up, not a dim glow from behind his curtains as he would be used to waking up to. He turned his head a little to one side and let his eyes open, blinking a few times as he adjusted and seeing a figure sitting beside his bed in a chair, already awake.
His head was pounding and his mouth was incredibly dry, and as he went to lift his arm to reach for a glass of water on his bedside table his arm felt incredibly heavy, he could see now that he was attached to a drip and to monitors, he let it drop back down and cleared his throat softly. “Combeferre–” he let his eyes drift shut for a moment before trying to sit up, “What happened?” He asked, not sure how else to phrase the question, had he been in an accident? Was he sick? He had no recollection of being brought to the hospital so something bad must have happened. Still though, he was relieved to see someone familiar, glad to have a friend at his side in this moment of complete confusion.
Combeferre sat up straighter when he saw his friend moving, he closed his book and set it on the table. Truth be told he hadn’t been doing much reading, it was late in the night, or perhaps early in the morning, and he was exhausted. “Shhh shhh lay down.” He’d volunteered to stay with Jehan for the night, knowing just how scary it could be to wake up in a hospital alone. He had devoted himself to giving his time to others, and tonight it was a friend in need of his time.
It had been a call from Feuilly, he was taking Jehan to the hospital, they had no idea what was wrong. Bahorel was able to stick around for a while, but he had work as well, Combeferre was the only one he could reach and “could you stay?” He’d agreed, asked which hospital Jehan was at, and told Feuilly to tell Bahorel to call half an hour before he needed to leave. “Keep me updated, I’ll tell the others.” Which was how Combeferre ended up on a hard plastic seat next to Jehan’s bed, book in hand trying his best not to fall asleep just in case Jehan woke up.
“Your appendix burst, how you went so long with Appendicitis with out telling anyone I have no idea.” He smiled up at Jehan “but the good news is you’re fine, the surgery went perfectly, and you should be good to leave the day after tomorrow.” Combeferre put a hand on Jehan’s patting it softly.
