netflix is paused on the television screen. her lips are coated with lipstick and stained with deep red wine, but it’s fading faster than the single thread holding her together. if only she could stop fidgeting as she bites and licks away at her lips, maybe her velvet clio lipstick wouldn’t be going to waste. she can’t help herself. so what if the rumors were clear that alice was seen with her weeks before. a strange rumor to beget her when, after all, she hadn’t seen alice in months. jess is a butterfly as she leans into alice on the couch where they sit after she welcomed her long time friend over just a bit earlier. she pulled her knees up on the couch and slid herself so close that she and alice touched. a supple warmth that cascaded down her spine and soaked away a little bit of nerves. “we can watch the movie soon if you want,” she says because she had been blabbering away for too long and after asking if they could watch a movie, it wasn’t a good look. “i haven’t seen any movies or hung out with anyone in a long time now.” it’s subtle in the jess way... like a blowing ball straight into the pins. “i wanted to do this specifically with you, you know? hang out, i mean.” scanning alice’s face for a sign, from the gutter of her cheeks to the center of her pretty lips, for a smile, for a secret. and because she’s jess, she can’t wait to be told, she has to bring it up herself, she has to ask. “have you been out lately?” she licks her lips (again), “you know like, with anyone?” she corrects herself, more specifically. fidgeting again she bumps into alice with her legs one more time, on purpose and with a superimposed brilliant smile.
