watch bravest warriors: an essay
i decided to revamp this post because i realized the first one didnt make much sense because i was really excited when writing it but regardless!!
if you dont wanna read this whole post, in short: Bravest Warriors is a web series created by Pendelton Ward (creator of Adventure Time) that has a main cast of people of color and LGBT teenagers!
but if youd like a more in depth explanation then here you go! keep in mind this post is SPOILER FREE, things that have been confirmed as canon will be in bold text and things that are implied but not confirmed will be in italics, keep in mind things that are implied are from the perspective of those parties (autistics, mlm, wlw, etc) if you arent any of these things then i will not take any criticism on why you believe they arent implied to be such
the main cast includes Beth, Chris, Danny, Wallow and Plum (not pictured); all of these characters are POC aside from Chris, who is white, and Plum who is an alien and therefore doesn’t have a canon race, however, I personally headcanon her as asian. and before i get into sexuality i’d really like to say Wallows character is probably one of my favorite portrayals in animation, he’s an incredibly sweet and sensitive black man whos nurturing and the most gentle of the group, which as a black man myself, this was so incredibly important to me!
but, moving on - Danny Vasquez is mexican and mlm (he has a crush on Chris)
Wallow is black and bi/mlm (has dated both women and genderless characters who use he/him)
Chris Kirkman is possibly mlm (confirmed hes done romantic things with Danny like cuddling)
Beth Tezuka is asian and possibly bi (evidence given throughout season 4 where she’s more intimate with other female characters and constantly talks about how she finds other girls attractive)
and Plum is canonly bisexual with a lesbian girlfriend named Peach in the comics!
(peach (purple skin) and plum (orange skin) kissing in an issue of the comic)
also, i believe it’s implied that Chris is autistic, he shows a lot of autistic traits which i heavily resonate with as an autistic person myself such as: having rituals he feels he needs to follow and preform at specific times (movie nights with Beth every week), not being able to preform properly without a certain item (he sleeps with his gloves on and doesnt take them off/gets upset when someones tries to take them off), sensitivity to certain environments and sensations (he gets panicked and uncomfortable when cold)
the show is a lot like Adventure Time in many aspects so if you were a fan of Adventure Time, I’d HIGHLY recommend giving Bravest Warriors a chance, it’s a new story with new characters but the same world building and story telling mechanics that we’ve grown to love, however, Bravest Warriors is for an older audience so there’s more romance, sexual innuendos and some swearing
this show isn’t going to be for everyone, the development of some characters can be disappointing at times, however, they often quickly fix it in my opinion and sometimes i feel the representation will move too slow, but it still is so incredible to me and it really is something i feel a lot of people will love!
please consider giving this show a try! the first two seasons are on YouTube and seaons 3 and half of season 4 is on KimCartoon the rest is free on VRV (with a week delay :pensive) and is airing in Canada on TeleToon!
