#secretlifeofbees was magical & moving. So glad I was able to witness this testament to the enduring beauty & strength of black women. Great to see @vintagepopsoul and @iambrettgray who I’ve worked with in film grace the stage. And running into @susanbirkenhead who I worked with on the #jellyslastjam album was a special treat. #ilovemusicals ❤️ (at Atlantic Theater Company) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0NRkNxhpp9/?igshid=1bislah3ursbi
Hello and welcome to the beginning of another week, with today being a day of remembrance in honoring our Veteran's. Today is also another installment of Musical Monday! This week's post is one that is well-known, even if it only had one stint 500+ performance run on Broadway. With that, let's roll onward to this week's Musical highlight!
Musical Monday date: 11/12/2018
Musical: Jelly's Last Jam
Book, Music, and Lyrics: George C. Wolfe, Jelly Roll Morton, and Susan Birkenhead
Broadway Run: April 26, 1992 - September 5, 1993
Awards Won: Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical (Gregory Hines), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Tonya Pinkins), Best Lighting Design (Jules Fisher)/Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical, Outstanding Actor in a Musical (Gregory Hines), Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical (Tonya Pinkins), Outstanding Orchestration/Musical Adaptation (Luther Henderson), Outstanding Lyrics, Outstanding Lighting Design.
Other: In addition to Best Musical and the above mentioned wins, Jelly's Last Jam was also nominated for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Keith David), Best Scenic Design (Robin Wagner), Best Costume Design (Toni-Leslie James), Best Choreography (Hope Clarke, Ted L. Levy, Gregory Hines), Best Direction of a Musical (George C. Wolfe), making it the most Tony-nominated musical of Best Musical nominees in 1992 with eleven.
Fun Fact: On Broadway, Gregory Hines would originate the role of Jelly Roll Morton. His brother, Maurice Hines, would tour the same role. Both brothers were responsible for their respective productions' tap choreography, as well.
Jelly's Last Jam is a hoot of a musical, preserved on video clips floating around the Internet, and a cast recording! Next week, we will wrap up our tour through the crazy year of 1992 Best Musicals with a singularly-titled show, and also the only one of the four Best Musical nominees to have since seen a Broadway revival. Until then, go see a show!
