Everything was soft and quiet and warm; the sun was coming through the window in golden rays, giving the world around them a heavenly glow. There was the distant rustling of pine leaves and wind, and the occasional skree of a bird flying over the compound.
Daniel took a deep breath, chest rising as he inhaled slowly, everything starting to come into focus around him. Soft sheets, warm sunlight, the gentle sound of voices from the other side of the door as people woke up and began their day. He exhaled, sinking into the pillow just a little more.
He gently turned his head to the side, eyes half lidded as he looked down at Jen, still resting against his chest. He had an arm curled around her, and the gentle rise and fall of her shoulders as she slept was a comforting rhythm that Daniel's own breath fell in step with. He didn't want to move, he didn't want to wake her up. But - gosh - it was like a scene from a dream. She was beautiful and peaceful and if she were awake, resting over his heart like this, she would have heard it skip a beat.
