We checked in with one of our Friday performers Jen Chapin to hear more about her story. Enjoy!
How did you get into music?
My family is full of musicians (in fact, we just did two “Chapin Family Concerts” in Bethlehem PA and Tarrytown NY this past weekend with my uncles and cousins) and I was raised in an environment where being a musician or artist was a normal, everyday profession. I had lots of other interests growing up and didn’t start to identify myself as a musician until my 20s, when I started writing my own songs and putting together bands, though I always sang.
What song and artist are you listening to right now?
Too many to mention! But I just lost an old friend and important musical inspiration named Jill Walsh, and cried and smiled through a listen to her album of original songs. She was an amazing singer and powerful songwriter.
What genre do you consider you work to be? Who are your major influences?
I use the term “urban folk soul” to describe my music. I’ve been influenced by artists like Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison and Bill Withers. On the lighter tip, as a singer I say I’ve been influeneced by everyone from “..Olivia Newton John to Chaka Khan..”
Do you have any upcoming shows? Where and when?
The night following the Prospect Concerts show where I’ll play with my Trio, I will bring my full band to BAM Café Live, for a free show at 9 pm, Saturday 12/22.
Then in January I have some more super local shows — a house concert benefit for my son’s school PS9 on January 5th, and a set at Rockwood Music Hall on the Lower East Side on January 6th. Often I’m touring around the US, but in focusing right now on preparing for a new album in the spring I’m staying closer to home.
Is there anyone you'd like to acknowledge for supporting you?
My bandmates for the show are amazingly supportive in their attitudes, friendship and musicianship. They really try to support the songs. Jamie Fox is a wonderful friend and guitarist, and Stephan Crump is a wonderful friend, husband, co-parent, and bassist!
