Chapter 1:
The sharp clacking of her heels echoed across the floor, loud enough to make everyone around her turn. Still, Jennie didn’t slow down. Her hurried steps never missed a beat as she tried to steady her breathing, forcing herself to hide the nervous—almost frightened—expression tugging at her face. Her arms were wrapped tightly around her torso. Suddenly she felt so small, like a child wanting to run from the nightmares that had been haunting her. She needed comfort. She needed safety.
She kept her gaze lowered, only then realizing she was still clutching the microphone. It slipped from her hand before she could react, clattering loudly against the floor. Her breath hitched. Her chest tightened. Her palms grew damp with panic.
Behind her, Blackpink’s crew rushed forward, their steps quick and purposeful as they moved to support her and guide her back to her room.
She couldn’t believe it—of all moments, it had finally happened during their world tour concert. Ever since the group rose to fame, the “what ifs” had quietly lingered in the back of her mind. And now, one of them had come true.
Jennie had been receiving hateful comments for years. She wasn’t naïve; she saw what people said about her online. She knew every cruel word, every rumor, every accusation. She simply chose to focus on the fans who loved her, choosing to ignore the hostility as best as she could.
But the fear never fully left her.
There wasn’t a single performance where she didn’t worry about her safety.
What if a fake fan rushed the stage and tackled her to the ground?
What if someone in the crowd threw something meant to hurt her?
The questions haunted her, clinging to her like shadows she could never outrun.
“I need some time alone, please.” Jennie’s voice quivered as she spoke, trying desperately to keep her emotions steady and not sound ungrateful to the crew hovering behind her. She opened the door, slipped inside, and quickly locked it behind her. Only then did she finally allow the tears to fall. Her breathing turned heavy as she slid down to the floor, quietly sobbing into the silence of the room.
Jennie was mature enough to understand that you can’t please everyone. No one in this world is liked by all—not even ordinary people are spared from criticism or negativity in their own neighborhoods or workplaces. It just happened that Jennie was famous… and she was painfully aware that half the world seemed to hate her.
But she couldn’t stop the thought from surfacing.
“Why do they hate me so much?” she whispered, her voice small and broken. She tried to steady her breathing as she wiped the tears from her cheeks, but it wasn’t enough. Another tear slipped free, trailing down her face.
Suddenly, her phone began buzzing repeatedly from somewhere in the room. Jennie knew someone was calling. She pushed herself up from the floor and took a deep breath before reaching for the device. Her heart tightened when she saw her mother’s name on the screen. Swallowing hard, she glanced at her reflection in the mirror.
Her manager must have called her mother. She was probably terrified for her daughter right now.
With shaking hands, Jennie pressed the answer button.
“Hello, Mommy?” Jennie said softly, trying to hide the tremor in her voice.
“Jennie! Baby, are you alright? Oh my gosh—tell me you’re fine…” Her mother’s voice wrapped around her like warmth and safety, and as much as Jennie didn’t want to seem weak, her composure immediately cracked.
“Mommy… yes, I’m fine.” She let out a small, shaky laugh while wiping her tears. “Don’t worry, I’m in my room right now. And I’m not going back on stage to perform. I don’t think I can face thousands of people right now. I’m… scared.” Jennie closed her eyes, the honesty weighing heavy on her tongue.
“Jennie, you don’t have to,” her mother said firmly. “I’ll call YG right now. Your life is important. You’re my daughter, and I want you to stay inside that room. Let me do the talking.” Worry was laced in every word.
“Mommy, please don’t—”
“Just let me speak to them. For now, calm yourself, drink some water, and try to relax. Got it?”
Jennie exhaled shakily as another tear slipped down her cheek.
The call didn’t last long. When it ended, Jennie didn’t know what else to do. From where she sat, she could still hear her bandmates singing and performing on stage. Of course the show had to go on. But Jennie couldn’t decide whether she should step out and continue or stay where she was. The guilt gnawed at her. She kept thinking about her fans, their supporters—the people who came to see them.
And she knew Jisoo, Rosé, and Lisa must be worried sick. If they had the choice, they would abandon the performance in a heartbeat just to rush to her side and comfort her.
After an hour or two of debating whether she should return to the stage, Jennie finally swallowed her fear. She thought about their fans—about the people who came to see them—and in the end, she chose to step out again. When she appeared under the lights, she tried her best to hide how uncomfortable she felt. A timid smile, her hands clasped behind her back, her gaze drifting down to her feet without her even realizing it.
But the moment her bandmates saw her, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé immediately rushed to her. They pulled her into a tight embrace, wrapping their arms around her as if shielding her from the world. The crowd erupted into cheers, chanting her name over and over. Jennie felt her chest tighten—not with fear this time, but with gratitude. Their support filled her with strength she didn’t know she still had.
When the show ended, the four of them returned backstage, only to be met by the entire staff—the crew, the security team, and all the YG personnel waiting inside the room.
“How could you let this happen?” Lisa’s voice cut through the tense silence. “I’m sorry, but I’m terribly mad! Jennie could’ve gotten seriously hurt—or worse!” Her tone was stern, her expression sharp as she faced the security team. “We all have our jobs, our roles. We’re a team, right? So what were you all doing?” Her voice rose, trembling with anger. “It took you five minutes to react! Jennie was already on the ground with the attacker on top of her!”
Her frustration was undeniable. Jennie was like a sister to her. Lisa had always been fiercely protective of her members—from the very beginning—and she would fight just as hard if the same thing had happened to Jisoo or Rosé.
The room fell silent after Lisa’s outburst. No one dared to interrupt her—not when every word she spoke was justified.
One of the senior security officers finally stepped forward, bowing his head. “We… we apologize,” he said, voice tight with shame. “The attacker blended in with the VIP section. He had forged permissions, and we didn’t realize it until it was too late. That’s on us.”
Rosé clenched her jaw. “Forged or not, he shouldn’t have been close enough to touch her.”
Jisoo crossed her arms, her tone cold and controlled in a way that made even staff members straighten up. “We trust you with our safety. Jennie trusts you. Today, that trust was broken.”
Jennie stood quietly between them, her fingers curled into her palms. She didn’t want them fighting. She didn’t want to be the reason the room felt like it was freezing over. But she also couldn’t forget the weight of that stranger’s hands holding her down, the panic squeezing her lungs, the terror of not knowing what he’d next do.
“Girls, enough. Let’s all calm down.” One of YG’s head officers stepped forward, tension tightening his features as he tried to steady the atmosphere. “The attacker has already been apprehended. I know how terrifying this must have been—especially for you, Jennie.” His voice gentled as his eyes rested on her. “You can take your time. Perform only when you’re ready. We’ll handle the headlines and everything that comes with them.”
Then his expression hardened. He turned sharply toward the assigned security team.
“You and the rest of the security detail are dismissed.”
A murmur of protest rose from the guards, but he didn’t spare them so much as a second glance. Their pleas died in their throats as he faced Lisa, Jennie, Jisoo, and Rosé once more.
“Girls, we’ll discuss this tomorrow. For now, go get some rest. I’ll take care of everything else. I’ll see you in the morning.”

Mrs. Kim was furious, her heart racing as she walked briskly down YG’s hallway. The moment she received the news about what had happened to her only daughter, Jennie Kim, she immediately booked a flight to Korea. She had been in New Zealand overseeing her family’s business, but nothing was more important than her daughter. She hadn’t informed Jennie about her visit. Instead, she emailed YG’s CEO, and after learning about the situation, he agreed to meet with her.
A security guard accompanied her, guiding her toward the CEO’s office. By then, headlines about the incident involving Blackpink’s Jennie were already circulating everywhere.
As she walked, her mind raced with worst-case scenarios—especially with the group set to begin their tour next month, not in Korea but abroad. The thought made her stomach twist. She was sick with worry, and she needed answers. Today, she was here to talk about Jennie’s safety and security—no excuses, no delays.
Mr. Yang Min-suk sat across the table from Mrs. Kim, the atmosphere heavy with unspoken worry. A quiet moment passed between them as he flipped through the incident report from Blackpink’s concert the previous night at Goyang Stadium. The girls had already emailed him, their concern for Jennie’s safety painfully clear.
“I’m sure you’re aware of what happened,” Mrs. Kim began, her voice steady but her hands tightly clasped together. “As a mother, all I ask is to hire someone for Jennie—someone I trust, someone who can watch over her and report directly to me. That’s all I want. I will fight for this.” She drew a long breath. “I don’t see anything wrong with my proposal. Just let this person work close to Jennie. She doesn’t need to know. I know she won’t like the idea.”
Mr. Yang nodded slowly, understanding the weight of her fear. He gently pushed a cup of tea toward her, offering whatever comfort he could.
“I don’t want to add more problems, Mrs. Kim,” he said softly. “And I see nothing wrong with your request. Jennie and the girls are very important to me. I’m concerned about her safety as well. She’s been receiving a lot of hate lately.” He sighed, leaning back in his chair. “I’ve already replaced the entire security team. Whoever you want to put on this job, just give me the name.”
He paused, thinking for a moment, then added, “Perhaps I can place this person as her assistant during the world tour. That way, they’ll be close enough to keep an eye on her without raising suspicion.”
Mrs. Kim finally let out a sigh of relief. She cleared her throat, regaining her composure. “That’s all I want, Mr. Yang. However… can you promise me one thing?” she asked.
The CEO nodded.
“Please don’t mention any of this to Jennie. She doesn’t like special treatment. She’ll only feel embarrassed about it.”
